    Any recommendations?

We currently have an audi a4 which we love but it is v tight in the rear for the kids. Perfect in every other way.

Alas it was bought when we were far more flush than we are now so budget would only be €10k or it PLUS I want the cheaper tax so 2008 +.

Bit of an ask, any thoughts?

Im 6ft 5 so i know what you mean the main ones i looked at were

    Ford Mondeo from 2007 +
    Mazda 6 from 2007+
    Skoda Superb from 2008 +

found them all very spacious and all nice to drive . the mazda is a bit smaller than the other 2 but not by much

I'd say on your budget of €10k you will struggle to find a Superb with respectable mileage on it. A Mondeo is probably more realistic:

+ 1 for the Superb. Huge interior space, achieved by using tardis like technology.

Have a look at the Skoda Octavia, I did a lot of research a few years ago when looking for a car with plenty of boot space. I found the Octavia had similar boot capacity to the the Mondeo estate and I would bet it has more than an A4. Actually the Octavia has 590lts vs the A4 at 490 lts

The Octavia has a big boot but being from the segment below the likes of the Mondeo, it has average rear leg room. If there is a 6 foot plus person in the front then the front seat will most likely be pushed back which would make the rear leg room even more restrictive for rear passengers. You have to consider all things, not just boot size.

Yeah that's what happens in the A4, H has seat pushed back as far as it will go and kids are kicking him in the back and squished into the bargain.

Will check out the skoda and others...

Everyone i talk to says the surperb has massive space inside it .

Dont get too hung up with getting a 08 car for the cheap tax. 07 2.0 Audi/mondeo is 710 , after 08 290 approx. People are walking away from pre 08 cars due to the high tax. .
The way i see it is every budget the lower tax rates are being put up, its only a matter of time til they are the same again.
Also The price difference between a 07 and 08 can be 2 or 3 grand. This would tax the car for a good few years on its own, plus the 07 might be a better car

I hate paying that €710 though! I am a bit hung up on gaining that saving this time really...

Could definitely live with the skoda, looks the best of them really. Hate the look of the ford. Mazda's ok. Doesn't look as big in the back as the others though?

Toying with the idea of an A6? How are they to run? Checked one out in a car park today, looked spacious in the rear?

If you were looking at a A6 is say get a late 08 onwards to make sure you get away from the possibility of the oil pump problems .

On done deal a 07 mondeo 2.0 diesel ranges from 4.5 -6.5k euro in a dealer, the two at 6.5k were main dealer cars. a 08 2.0 mondeo ranges from 5.5k to 9k euro from dealers.
I actually know of a garage at home that sold a 07 mondeo before christmas for 2500euro with 140000miles . car was in very good condition but as it was 07 nobody wanted it.
There is a stigma attached to pre 08 cars

Are you getting any value against the current A4?

The tax is high on this but it would be great car, low mileage and everything

Something odd with that ad. they have been trying to sell that car for 9 months. They are now looking for 12k. they got an offer of 13k for it 6 months ago.
They also say all its doing is short trips now, not good for the DPF

There was it and another A6 08 with low mileage on adverts. Couldn't find the other ad. I wasn't really posting to buy that exact car, more to see if the A6 08 would be option, they are a lovely car and great space in them

I know my brother had A4 and swapped it recently for A6, this was for space for 3 kids in back and also because he is tall and the A6 gives him loads of room

Yeah an A6 swap is v tempting.

We haven't made any enquiries around what value we might get for our a4 yet. It's 2006 and somewhere around 120k miles I think, 2.0 TDi, S-Line. It was a UK import.

A chap working in a garage sold a 2006 a4 149k miles uk car , leather seats etc recently for around 5k . it was the more desirable bulletproof 1.9 engine though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 397 ✭✭ellee

Yeah, looking at ads, I'm thinking we might get €4k or so trade in. Not sure though, need to check the spec too...

As UK import you should have more extras in the car compared to Irish base models....if you have a service history on it should be able to get 4-5k as mentioned.

Might not be bad option to look at something like this with trade in should be able to pick up for 9k or so

Other option maybe to look at is the Opel Insignia, very nice car and loads of room in it.

I have drove Mondeo's and they are rock solid. Good engine as well in them

Even looking at a Passat, it is a little bit bigger on inside compared to A4.

I mention the A6 because the room in them is great. I was amazed how much space are inside them when compared to A4

Skoda Superb is unbelievably big. Even cavernous inside.

We got a Mondeo and it has good space and comfortable seating.

Yeah I reckon we'll have to just go drive a few. The skoda does look huge in some photos. All the advice has been great!
