Best crossover auto right now

What's the best crossover right now with an auto gearbox?

    Things that are important:

    Reasonable road tax
    Good milage
    Nice looks
    Budget around €30k

My options seem to be: Kia Sportage, Hyundai ix35, BMW X1, Honda CRV & the Nissan Qashqai.

The Kia and Hyundai are probably out of the picture because the only options for an auto are the 2L diesel - road tax €700, I think.

The Nissan is looking like a decent option, 1.6L diesel, cheap road tax... what's the CVT gearbox like?

The Honda looks decent too, it's a little pricy though.

How can you spend 30k on a car and then worry about tax on a 2litre diesel. Madness.

    That was my thoughts.
First criteria on the list is "cheap tax". :(

What about style, driving position, comfort, equipment ...

I think the CVT In the Nissan's is currently unavailable because it kept breaking. Have that type of auto as well.

New model ix 35 and sportage on the way, so can't order the 2.0 at the moment - well, that's what Kia told me last month, not sure about Hyundai.

    Kuga?

Subaru XV or Forester? Best AWD system out there really and can actually perform in off road situations. It's full time AWD unlike most of the others which are selective AWD.

XV is €25K-€34K depending on model. €390 road tax.

Forester starts at around €34K. €390 road tax.

Not sure if they are available in auto.

I get the impression the OP like 90% of crossover buyers, is not interested in awd.

It's more about being a 2L diesel, I don't need that engine size.

    Is that a bad thing?

Thanks! Didn't see that one, it doesn't look like they have an auto option though :(

Never implied that it was, just a comment to the previous poster about awd and offroading.

The Forester does but it starts at E34K ish.

With regards to a crossover and AWD, unless you plan to go away from tarmac, into fields, paddocks, beach driving etc then you don't need AWD. Most crossovers are FWD only as its cheaper to make, car is lighter and better emission ratings etc...

The AWD on the Subaru is a very good system. It does reduce your fuel economy a touch because you have full time AWD. It's somewhat a safety feature too having the full time AWD too. It improves handling on the road.

If its tarmac driving you are doing, then you don't need the AWD system.

Yup it's all tarmac driving. AWD could be handy during the winter with the better grip on icy or snowy roads but the extra weight and cost etc don't really make it worth it for the driving we're doing. Thanks.

    Citroen Cactus ?

Saw loads of them in France last summer, looks wise they tend to grow on you.

The Ford Kuga is a very stylish and classy car no doubt but I have heard they are not great economy wise. A pity as I think its one of the best looking SUV,s out there.
The Honda CRV is a classy looking car and very well engineered to. It also now comes with a 1.6diesel that might suit you better if it come with an auto gearbox.
The Hyundai IX35 is being replaced later this year with a new Tucson. It looks a lot like its bigger brother the Sante Fe. Id say the new Sportage will not be out till at least next year. You can get good deals on the current one and economy wise they are very good. Maybe there is one with auto at a Kia garage in the country somewhere.
You could also look at a Skoda Yeti or the VW Tiguan.

Tbh, nothing you say OP makes me think you need a crossover.
If you want the style then Volvo XC70 would be more your car. It looks the deal but isn't a "real" crossover like Forester/Outback etc.
You can get it in various configs; auto, diesel etc

I was over in Citroen yesterday and saw a couple of these in the flesh.

I left thinking they're kinda ok I guess.

As the day went on I found myself pricing them and looking at in depth reviews.

The more I look at them the more I think they're one of the best looking cars on the road today.

That said I can see how they're a marmite car at the same time.

There's a gunmetal grey version with red wing mirrors and very cool looking alloys that really shows off the car imo.

The lunatic yellow/green version is a bit much for even me.
