BER/Solar

Initial BER has proposed 7 Dimplex c250 solar thermal panels to meet Part L requirements in a 302m² house. (Cost €6k)

We only have a young family with 3 children aged 6,4 & 2 and don't think we'll be using that much DHW.

I'm worried that the majority of the solar energy will be dumped during the summer months.

Planning on 2 stoves (with back boiler) as renewable heat source and oil as a backup heat source.

I read some recent threads in relation to PV and how it directs extra electricity to the immersion.

    Appreciate any feedback.

    Thanks,

    JJ

7 solar panels is ridiculous to suggest to meet Part L

that amount should also be able to provide some energy to space heating, did your assessor include for this?
    do they know what this
    AppQ_SolarSpaceHtg_April_09.xls
    is?

PV cells have become economic enough now to be realistic, although they work on a 'use it or lose it' basis.

Has the assessor included for one stove to be dedicated wood burning?

Are you sure its 7 panels or is it 7m2 worth of panels (3-4 panels)

    Definitely 7 panels.... Almost 14m2....

He has put in some values for wood burning stoves

Wow. That's one way to get compliance.

My "professional" specified 19.5 square metres of pv to meet part L.

House doesn't have a south facing roof..

Doesn't make sense . I made compliance with 7 m2 of solar . 2 wood burning stoves. Oil burner. 300 m2 of building

As you say yourself you will be doing alot of washing or dumping..... on a number of days last week 14 M2 of F.Plate would have given you around 17 Kwh, enough to satisfy a demand for 292 Litres of water at 60C or 418 Litres at 45C.

Thanks for the info John T.
Do you have any feedback from a BER perspective? Is there less of a BER requirement for solar PV?

I haven't gone back to the BER assessor yet... I've been flat out the last few weeks working with builder... Foundations are now down and external walls are going up...

to be honest, you should have your prelim BER assessment finalised before you even commence.

you could be leading yourself into trouble.
