Hi, anyone played here recently, from previous threads believe it was to getting an upgrade, has this happened yet?

Played it a few times last year is nice course but you could see it slipping on upkeep viewpoint.

I'm a member - the improvement works are ongoing and will take time but already some substantial improvements in the standard of the greens - massive job done on the fifth with all the rubbish on the right taken out - so no more drop zone(once the grass has matured), seeded and a new bunker installed at the front of the green. All fairways and tees being fertilized and all ponds already cleared out read for some new planting.

Can't wait for the summer to see the greens and fairways - the course condition has been pretty dire over the last 5 years or so but definitely on the way back :)

Played St Margarets today - played poor enough from the off - 30pts , but had a level par back 9. So left happier than I should have.

But was very impressed with course condition , greens some of the best I played on this year. Hardly had a bad lie all day.
The bunkers have suffered with the recent rain - but lads were working away on them.

It is one of the hardest openings out there , didn't help I didn't know course , but a slightly errant shot and a double is on the way.

Whilst the par 5s are manageable and some reachable - the overall distance of the course at 6629 yards (blue) requires good ball striking and with the wind today, it was far from a drive and wedge course. The index 1 is a serious hole due to length and the last is as hard a finish as is out there.

Water features on so many holes, and pins can be very close to water. It is also nice to see how the trees have matured around the course. You feel miles away from it all on agricultural land (as you are in a way) - but you are only 10 minutes from Swords.

You can see this was one of the big idea courses of the past - was serious money to enter at one stage and a considerable investment to build. There seems to be a bit of activity around the place and new management in place.

Still a bar / food / and pro shop. So everything in place. I understand the top pro, John Kelly is still solving the problems of the more and less talented in his bay in range next to chipping area.

So whilst I could see difficulty in the course - a terrific score of 42 pts was in , so I'm missing something . No, it opens up after first 6 and is scorable from then on.

When you think of all the courses in this area (swords/airport) - it is hard to make sense of where golf was in the past. Many of these courses pre date the real Celtic Tiger crazy years, so clearly there was a reason and a market for all these courses.

Swords has a population of near 50,000 - but with drink driving laws , the life of golf clubs outside the town areas , even for me as a golfer, still feels a niche market.

I'd love to think that all these places will fill up again and be the life and party of the area - but the way people go about golf these days seems very different, car - pay - play - pick up kids.

Anyway , it will be interesting to see how St. Margarets goes. It seems to have everything you need in golf. Terrific practice facilities, a great course, a big clubhouse.

Very enjoyable - As I was leaving a (good looking) scandinavian couple were asking staff , why is the place so empty . Sadly, very few people in Ireland have the answer to that question. Prior to them asking , I was thinking the place had a little bit more life in it, to other places I've been.

Nice review Fix - you are spot on about the first 6 holes, if you can get through there without disaster then you can put a score together but with OB and water on many holes there are so many opportunities for disaster - especially the par 3s off the back tees which are all around 180+ depending on the flag position.

Around 100 new members so far this year and the course is getting into good shape, greens good but will take a bit longer to get properly established.

Synergy have done a great job so far.

    Definitely on the up :)

I joined last week. Very happy with my decision. Place is coming together very well and there's a good atmosphere about the place. I'm not sure why people think it's quiet. On Wednesday with the open and the members' 9 hole it's ticking over all day.
Wind was fierce yesterday. Managed to get through those first 6 tough holes with 12 points but sent 2 drives into the long stuff on 8 and 9 and finished with a disappointing 32. Did par 18 for the first time though!
Gross +1 won it off 7. Some round in that wind!

Delighted to hear all this positive news about St Margarets - I'm playing there in 3/4 weeks' time.

Have always enjoyed the course having played it a good bit in last 4/5 years - although I never had the pleasure to play it in its original 'pomp'...

    See you soon, lads!

Great to hear such good reviews. Playing it tomorrow morning and really looking forward to it. The Par 3s are all excellent and 18 is a great finish

Got a great morning for the round. Course is in great condition throughout. It really is a great test of golf all the way round. Par 3s are excellent and a few lovely Par 4s too. Staff were very friendly which makes a big difference. Will be a strong contender for my membership next year

After enjoying my last round here - played at weekend.

    Was a nightmare.

There were members there , Teetimes.ie time slots, and many societies.

I had invited a few lads up from Cork and when we got there it was so busy , we were about 25 minutes waiting after our tee time to get away.

Then the round started there were so many people on the course it was dangerous - on a few holes the society played the par 3s in 8 balls.

The course was still in great shape.

But was a 5 hour 5 minute round. (and the wait to tee off on top)

We weren't in a rush - did enjoy our game , but was so bad we even missed the first 1/2 of munster final.

Anyway , good crew up there, but clearly still some teething issues.

What time did you start? Was a big crowd out for the medal in the morning. My round was about 4hrs10 starting on time and ending at 3:30 pm. There was a big society group going out just after us.
