anyone know if any insurance companies do this?

Ive rang a few and nobody offering due to age of car

Strange then you cant get insurance for a car that passes its nct, taxed and serviced?

Axa my current company are offering a ridiculous quote so looks likely I will have to scrap the car

What kind of a car is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭ironclaw

I had a 99, same position as yourself. Great car, not an ounce of bother and new NCT. Best I could do was TPFT for €1200. The 2006 model of the same car came in at under €600 comprehensive. It seems to be anything over 15 years old is loaded.

That said, one company made a 'good' point that anything that age, that isn't vintage or classic, is most likely not worth to comprehensively insure (Didn't sit well with me on principal) So perhaps that a quick selling point as the vast majority of people want 'cheap' insurance and in that age bracket, the majority of cars would suit a 'run into the ground run around' Unfair of course on those of us that don't see it that way.

    bmw 520

the quote from axa is almost 200e more than last year

    have 20 years full licence
    7 years no claims
    no points
    parked in garage
less then 500 miles a year

think its expensive as cant seem to find any other company to insure it

I worry about the same happening to mine to be honest....forced to get rid of it despite it being immaculate due to age :(

I feel your pain. From what I recall, your current insurance company cant not offer you a new quote when you go to renew it, just could be a lot higher and force you into getting rid

if I have someone else on my policy, quote will come down too

more miles and another driver = reduction in quote despite the little I drive and never having a penalty point or conviction

Hmm. They're quoting me €544 for full-comp on a 1994 520 on 5,000 km/year, I'm ould as fcuk and much the same license/NCB setup as yourself.

Experienced the same myself, have 99 Honda Accord, just passed NCT with flying colours and multiple places won't even quote and those that do are fairly high ended up sticking with 25Plus from last year. I know people give out about them a bit but have found them grand. Ridiculous really, interestingly one place I rand said they couldn't quote however your man said if I already had a policy with them and was transferring to this car it would only be 600ish.

Anyone try First Ireland brokers? They seem to insure the older stuff.

i was with aig using first ireland as broker. full comp classic insurance on my 93 bmw 740 for 400 a year. daily and only car but limited to 6 or 10 k a year . car must be 15 years or older

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,907 ✭✭✭power pants

will try first ireland now, thanks

I use AXA myself , but every year they seem to pick a number from the sky for a renewal , however Ive found if you go into one of their branch's they will drop prices , up to as much as 140 euros on one quote.

My own car has a highish milage and is elderly too.

I had a 95 Merc c250d insured with fbd for 461 euro, was 27 at the time. Might be worth trying them

I've said this any times about First Ireland. I've been with them 4 years and never had trouble with them. They are always much cheaper than any of the other insurance companies.

it's true though. Paying a couple of hundred excess and claiming another couple of hundred is counter productive. The ncb would be worth more to you than the car.

Did first ireland offer you a classic policy?

I'm in a horrible position with 00 Integra type R. It's nearly a grand to insure as it is, but when it's 15 years old, I fear it may need to come off the road for a few years. :(

Some places offer classic at 15 years.
Will likely only be third party only though.
I was offered it on my 97 rallye a few years back.

Went with AIG through a broker instead though.

    Cheers for the reply mick,

Yeah, I really had hoped that this year I would get it on classic insurance, as I do extremely low mileage. But a lot of what I'm hearing now is that a car has to be 20 years as of last year to qualify for classic insurance.

It's an awful pity, cars between 15-20 are almost in limbo land now.

pretty much what happened to me and my glanza.

between being an import and crossing the dreaded 15 year mark insurance companies couldn't run much further away from it.

it's kind of sad that anything other than a 2010 1.6 diesel golf is now pretty difficult to insure. the last year or two the insurance companies just seem to be making it up as they go along, price increase after price increase and narrowing the goal posts in terms of accepted vehicles each time.

it's gotten to the point where the possibility of getting reasonably priced insurance is nearly a greater deciding factor in buying a car than the dreaded cost of tax.

That's not good news for me then, and unfortunately it's the first I've heard of cars 15 years + been difficult to insure.

I've a 00 accord Euro R, spotless condition, owned it 5 years, just flew through the NCT last week, and now I hear I will have difficulty insuring it when the renewal comes through the door.

I'm 30+, 0 points and have a Full NCB. That was the last thing I was expecting to hear :(

As far as I know the same company will continue to insure you as long as you don't let the policy lapse. It happened me once on an '89 316. Took it off the road for 6 months for repairs and the company I had been with for 6 years wouldn't take me back:confused:
    I now have a minter 318ci with 123.ie fully comp for €360.
Here's a laugh for ya. I got a hypothetical quote for my 18 y/o young lad, prov license, 1L micra from Liberty during the week, €6288 only . How could anyone pay that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,099 ✭✭✭tonic wine

    ^^ lol.

Went to first Ireland online for a quote, entered car and personal details.
All in for less the €550. More then I'm paying now, but I can relax again.

That said, a mate of mine in work has a 98 reg. I don't think he ever had any difficulty insuring it due to its age

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,907 ✭✭✭power pants

it is classic insurance.only stipulation stipulations are I join a classic car club, any. Doesn't matter where Or if it's free etc
Also.limit of 6k mileage per year.
I drive under 500 per year anyway, so that's not an issue

350 and I have options than AXA, breakdown assistance etc

    It's fully comp.as well

    600 from.AXA was 3rd party.

think you need to make sure you are placing a quote in classic insurance and not standard insurance?

Liberty are quoting insane numbers. I was quoted over 2000. Paying 600 with AA.

Have been with 123.ie the last few years for my 93 corolla as a daily driver, not looking forward to looking around this year for quotes! I paid just over 500 for TPFT last year which is a bit crazy as is.

Buy a cheap ass newer car. Insure it TPFT. Now you have a daily driver. Classic insurance on your remaining vehicle :-)
