Clean/booster phone apps - do they really work?

Have a Motorola Moto E phone and have been trying apps like Clean Master, DU Speed Booster, DU Battery Saver, etc.

There free and have great graphics telling me how much my phone has been cleaned or boosted but are they really making a difference?

I switched my phone on/off for the first time in a while yesterday and it was alot faster.

Is that the thing to do - just turn phone on/off regularly? Or can anyone suggest a better app?

Most of those apps use more RAM themselves and slow things further.

I eventually reinstalled Battery Doctor after experimenting, post-Lollipop upgrade, on my Moto G 1st Gen. Without it I was getting a day and a half, with it I top two full days easy.
