We are thinking about replacing the rather insipid beast we have inherited. Are there any star performers, makes to avoid, or other purchasing tips anyone would care to share?

NB title changed from "Domestic Water Blasters"

A Google search for 'water blaster' suggests that that is a term used in NZ to refer to what's known here as a 'power washer' - a device used to wash cars and clean patios and decking with a concentrated jet of water - is that what you're looking for?

Correct. That is it. I had the same problem with Google and was too dumb to figure out why. Thankyou.

Ah ha. Google search for power washer brings up links for 'pressure washers'. some progress being made here now

The principal brand in this part of the world is Karcher, there are several models (all yellow) and most of the domestic models can be purchased from the likes of Woodies. The German discount stores Aldi and Lidl often do generic models from time to time. Karcher would be more expensive but you are guaranteed to be able to buy parts and accessories for the foreseeable future.
