Treatment for Retained Placenta

Apologies in advance for those with a sensitive disposition!:D

Had a couple of cows calving slightly prematurely over the past 10 days & have held their 'cleaning.' Have always used intra-uterine pessaries in the past with good success, but vet does not supply them any more and gave me metricure instead. I always thought that metricure was for 'washing out' cows and generally use an alamycin/distilled water combination on the advice of another vet well known in breeding circles.
Question is does anyone have any other viable alternatives/treatments for the above?

    TIA

If I think one is going to hold it after a hard calve or backwards calf I give 40cc of pen & strip after calveing.

If she holds it after 7 days I get out the long gloves and clean her out then wash out with warm water and iodine useing a funnel and long pipe.

Not saying that's the correct way to do it but it's what I do and it workes.

Vets have always prescribed Metricure tubes for retained cleanings, And in fairness they do the job, we usually wash out the cow after she passes them and give her a shot of tylosin to prevent endometritis!

If the cow is very dirty/smelly, I usually wash out with lots of water and surgical iodine. Do not use tincture of Iodine as it will burn. I think that metricure works well after you get rid of the initial volume of gunk- a few days after the iodine wash out. If you dont want to use metricure, a 3 day course of injectable antibiotic can be just as good. A zero withdrawal injectable works well for dairy cows.
