Cleaning Vintage Straight Razor

Got a vintage Carl Friedrich ERN 5/8 round point from eBay. Its going to be first full hone project. Theres a lot of gunk in at the hinge pin that I cant get to. Is leaving it to soak in a limescale/water solution a bad idea?
The hinge pin is very loose aswell. I used some dental floss & nail polish remover to get some of the dirt out of the jimps on the tang, which worked okayish.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?

The best way to get the stuff around the pivot pin is probably taking it apart. Don't put it in a water/limescale remover bath. It's a carbon steel so you'll probably just cause more rust.

You might just be better Not worrying too much about the stuff around the pivot pin and trying to tighten the pin so that the scales don't flop around while honing.

Table spoon can be used to tighten pivot pin. Gentle taps should do the job. Do this from both sides to center the blade between scales.

    Maciek.
