It's been about 6 years or more since I last had a interview but I have a job interview coming up its for a general op. What should I wear? A suit is most definitely over the top.

    Not it's not.

Definitely wear the suit. You only get one chance to make a first impression.

A suit can be OTT - eg for a job as a product builder or building labourer or McDonalds worker or whatever.

For an interview in general, be a little bit better than how people working there would be dressed day to day. (Or than they would be dressed coming/going to work.)

Depends for the position but a nice trousers (not jeans), good jumper or shirt (no tie) is usually fine.
Dress like a first date ;)
