    Hi,

I hope this is the right forum if not can a mod move it somewhere more appropriate.

I bought a house 15 years ago with an ex I have a kid with. We broke up two years after we bought the house and since then I have nothing to do with the house. At the time she had a job and could afford the repayments on her own. I would now like to get my name removed from the house. I tried to do this about 5 years ago and the bank said I could not as although I was not paying the mortgage I was the only person on the mortgage working. So although my ex was managing to pay the mortgage and still is they wouldnt let me remove my name.

I don't want any payment for the house I just want my name removed so I can move on.

Does anyone have any advice on how I might be able to do this?

You would need to speak to a solicitor. Though what it sounds like you actually want is to have your name taken off the mortgage. The ownership of the house and the liability to repay the mortgage are two separate things.

Thanks for the reply. Yes it is the name off the mortgage I am looking for.

But you want it left on the house? Your name?

I would like my name removed from the house and name off the mortgage.
Most important is the mortgage though as that is affecting a possible mortgage application.

You will find it very difficult to do this, because the way the bank sees it, is that they currently have two fish on the hook. Why release one? To them, your name being on the house is irrelevant, so long as it is on the mortgage. Crappy situation for both you and your ex, but it's in the banks best interest to keep you on the books.

The only way to do this is for your ex to take out a new mortgage in her own name to redeem the old mortgage. I would imagine you are in positive equity, but your ex will need to qualify for a mortgage in her own right.

Thanks for the advice folks. She wouldn't qualify for a mortgage at present. Looks like I may need to stay on it for the foreseeable future.
