Fuel pump or not fuel pump

My 99 E200 , has tarted to play up fuel pump wont start , changed fuel filter and pump relay all ok , for a day or two the nothing car turns over but fuel pump does not start , then it will for a day or two then it wont, today it stranded me twice but got going eventually.yesterday i got the spluttering effect but got home.
Q is the pump on its last legs or am i missing something.

Hi,had similar probs.' with my old c200,as guy told me one of my 2 pimps was knackered ,ended up buying one from trainors in Tyrone,cheap enough

Ill pick up a pump and put it in , what has me puzzled is the pump runs then doesent , but i will replace it .
Did you get the surging symtoms like it was running out of juice?

Faulty earth with the fuel pump perhaps? Had the same problem with my 2003 Ford Focus last year.

Will the fuel pump for a 2.3 Eclass be ok on a 2.0 E class ?

Just to add to the confusion , when i pull up at lights or park for a moment there is a fuel smell in the car ?ans slight irraric idle 500 to 750 to 1000 rpm up and down ?
