How long are employee records kept by employers, and in what detail...?

I worked in a retail store for about 8, 9 months about 7 years ago. Problem is, I don't remember the specific dates, and I'm compiling a CV. I also *completely* bolloxed up a mystery shopper, when I was hungover and exhausted. Got about 30%. I did not get a bollocking from the manager because usually I get 100%, but the bad one stands out in memory!

If my employer calls them up--which is unlikely, given how long ago it was--do places like B&Q, Woodies, etc, have records on their employees?

Cheers, and apologies for the crap post!

My bad! I did a quick search on "retail" and a bunch of questions landed in from this place. But I wasn't thinking, thanks for that

You're asking if your new employer might ring them to verify you worked there and how you performed?

I think you're safe enough. For a start, that's a long time ago so unless you've very little on your CV since then that's more relevant, then I don't think they'll be bothered. Also, an employer should ask you for the contact details of any referees.

Also, I'd be surprised if a previous employer would go into that sort of detail if contacted - it can be a bit of a thin ice scenario, legally speaking.

If you're not sure about the exact dates, then I'd just put the year down - I don't think it matters too much at this stage.

Alright cheers Eoin. Yeah, I was wondering if some bored HR person would decide to go back that far. Who knows, but you're probably

Yeah, you're way overthinking this. Even in the event that they did ring up the company, all they'll be given is confirmation that you worked there on certain dates.

No employer provides a detailed breakdown of an employee's history when they're asked for a reference. The only place that mystery shopper encounter is even recorded anymore is in your own head :)
