1999 corolla clutch problem?

About a month or more a ago I was about to pull out of a petrol station when my corolla seemed to get lodged in first gear. The engine started running rough and I had to knock off the car to take it out of gear. It happened once since then but until last night it was if nothing was wrong. Last night it happened again car lodged in gear. I can switch perfect when engine is off but otherwise it won't budge. Does this sound like a clutch or gearbox issue?

The gearbox has always been a bit dodgey from first to second but this is new.

If its the clutch what kind of price should I be expecting?

    Cheers

When last did you change the oil in the box?

Probably been a year at least. Not sure if many mechanics change the gear oil in a regular service. Seem to just top it up.

Check the clutch fluid, it sounds like either the master cylinder or the slave cylinder are losing pressure.

I got the clutch replaced tonight. Slave cylinder was changed too. Changing gears is way smoother now car is going great. There is one issue though. There's a new problem I noticed tonight when bringing the car back from the mechanic. When I take off in first or am driving very slow in first and all of a sudden accelerate under the gear stick there's a clunking kind of sound. This is new and I've never heard it before.

I rang the mechanic, he said he didn't notice and I've to bring it to him tomorrow evening for a look. Does anyone have any idea what this might be?
    Presuming it isn't normal.

Other than this the gear change is way smoother.. Clutch must have been worn since I got it.

Possibly a gearbox mounting left loose.

Hopefully it isn't anything too serious. Would you say its safe to drive before showing it to the mechanic? It seems to be driving grand other than the noise. Having said that I wouldn't want to chance it if there was a chance of making it worse.

It should be fine to drive, just go easy when changing gears.

I wouldn't drive it without gettin the problem looked at,a loose mount will get worse and possibly come loose dropping gearbox causing serious damage

Careless mechanic if he forgot to tighten up a mount or similar.

Just out of interest, how much did it cost to change the clutch in the car. Have a '99 Corolla too and the clutch is starting to go in it. Anyone ideas on how much roughly I'd be looking at.

Had my clutch changed three weeks ago for my 93 corolla, cost 305. I know someone in work who has a 2004 Corolla and it cost her 700 to get her clutch changed three months ago. So somewhere between those two figures!

Cheers. I'd be hoping near the lower figure. It's a 1.3 engine car.
