    Hi,
Should all Saorview approved TV's be capaple of displaying Saorview HD channels in HD.? I have a Samsung UE24h4003 tv. I bought it on the understanding that it was Saorview approved as per Powercity website.http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-11-24H4003 The picture did not look great close up so I got onto Samsung customer support and they told me it did not have a HD tuner,I am receiving RTE HD channels but are they being downscaled to SD.

It probably doesn't have a Freeview HD tuner. It wouldn't display the Saorview HD channels at all, if it didn't have the necessary video decoding capability.

I'm not seeing it on the Saorview approved list btw, although I'm not sure how up to date this is kept.

    Thanks Thurston,
The spec states that it has an MPEG 4 tuner,So it can decode Saorview channels but I believe there are SD and HD MPEG 4 tuners available.

If you can watch rte hd channels, you have an mpeg-4 tuner, however the display is "HD Ready" not "Full HD", so yeah it is being downscaled (from 1920x1080 to 1280x720)
    I don't know if there's really a colossal difference on a 24 inch tv

With only MPEG4 SD (level 3) support, you won't see the HD channels at all: you need level 4 for that. There is no SD simulcast.

    Thanks Parasite
That's what I thought. I know it makes little difference on a 24 inch.
Surely RTE does not broadcast in 1080p. If I am getting 720 p then that's better than SD Does'nt HD ready mean HD 720P from an external source.
I just thing many people believe they are getting a HD picture when they by Saorview Approved, but this may not always be the case.

It's 1080i, with a horizontal resolution of 1440 pixels, if I'm not mistaken.

Is there anyway I can see Saorview RTE HD channels on a Saorview Approved Tv and not be getting 1080i

You'll only see what the display can actually deliver: in this case the resolution is 'HD ready' 1366 x 768 pixels. The approvals process doesn't cover displays afaia.

It will also depend on the original quality of the material being broadcast as to how things actually look, regardless of the transmission bandwidth.
