Confused about career path

    Hi everyone.

Ever since I was at school I've been confused about what to do as a career. I spoke to numerous career guidance counsellors (most of them telling me helpful things like "you should be a nurse, it's a nice job for a girl"!!). I narrowed it down to a few things but they were all vastly different. I pursued one hoping that it would make me happy (but also a little scared of going for the other two just in case I failed as I was painfully shy and I would have needed some more confidence in myself and my ability to be successful).

I've been working in this job for a few years and I hate it. I always didn't like most of my degree. The initial stages were fine as they were broad and I was very interested but as it became more focused, I lost interest. I found it very hard to study and did very little. I somehow managed to pull a 2.1 out of the bag with mainly night before cramming sessions.

So now I'm back to deciding between the other two options I had originally. I have no idea how to choose. Both would involve retraining and the costs associated. Even though they are so different, they both play to different strengths I have and I know I'd be equally good at both of them. I'd shadowed and done work experience in both and I'm still struggling to choose. All I know for sure is that I don't want to stay in this line of work.

I dread going to work every day. It's not just the people there, it's the actual subject matter. It bores me to tears.

Does anyone have any advice about how to decide please? I'm still in my 20s so I know I have time but with having to retrain, I don't want to wake up one day and suddenly I'm 40 and I'm still stuck in this job. Help :(

Biggest step to take is realize you need to change something and to commit to it. You have done this so although you have work ahead, the most gut wrenching part is over and you nailed it!

You have two options, career a and career b. you need a way to help decide which one is best.

-Do a pro's and cons list for both. write down all pros and cons no matter how ridiculous they seem. write them quickly without thinking about them too much, to help get your true feelings on the matter. seeing your answers in black and white will help a lot in deciding.

-look forward 20 years if you took career a and then career b. which one appeals to you more? which one do you think has less chance of turning out like your current career?

-look at the market, are there better prospects for career a over career b or vice versa? if you are still undecided, seeing that you have a much better chance at employment in one career, or one career pays a lot better could help clinch the decision.
