Guys I know this is an old thread but the topic is relevant to me.
My missus have bmw 520 diesel 2008 but she has clocked in 100000mls (visited me the UK etc).
Can you any of ya out there advice on what to change and when?
I must say that it still drives really well fair play to BMW.

Moved out from old thread, now everyone can focus on your particular car.
Did you google bmw 520d maintenance schedule?
The car's computer should also tell you what's needed.

Each car is different in fairness.
There is a schedule but get the car in a ramp and see what the story is.
Whatever needs to be replaced will be obvious.

nobody can say what will fail and when if you get me?

There is no definitive answer, it depends on what was done at the last service interval and what annual mileage you are doing. You will also have to check the car's on board computer (idrive) as these cars are fitted with condition based servicing which means the computer should tell you when stuff like oil/filter, brake pads and fluid need changing.

One thing I will say though is that with that infamous N47 engine and timing chain I'd be changing the oil quite regularly anyway and not the 20k mile interval that BMW have.

Is the cooling system seen as a weakness in the e60? If so, what sort of stuff tends to go wrong?

Is there any preventative maintenance in that area? Is it worth it? I mean, what would the cost be if something goes wrong - v - spending on preventing something that might never happen ? Is it better to just wait and see if a problem develops?

Radiator can go. You're starting to get into the age that the battery and ICE go. About 120 and 300 respectively. Regular oil changes and keep and eye on the iDrive.

    This must be a record.

    The op replies after 2years.

Hopefully the car was serviced in the mean time.

It's ok, we put longlife oil in, it's good for another 18 months or 69k, whatever comes last :)
