    Hi All,

I am wondering are any of my fellow board posters thinking of going to NZ for the 2017 tour.

I am enquiring of the cost the packages could run too?, I ideally would like to do the whole tour and travel around NZ backpacking and if anyone would have any idea of the cost 6 weeks in New Zealand would run to it would be very beneficial.

    Thanks in advance

If you do go, check out Wilderness Campervans, were brilliant when we went to RWC 2011.

I spent 6 weeks there in 2011 for the RWC. spent 4 weeks in a camper van another 2 with a car with a few hotels and hostels along the way, especially in the last 2 weeks.

booked flights with trailfinders and that was E1200
my share of the camper van was 750 + 200 for the car.
you also have to factor in match tickets

The FX rate in 2011 was around the 1.7.It's now 1.43 so it'll be a lot more expensive to go there in euro terms now.

I don't recall the specific prices of the hostels I stayed in but I do recall thinking they were pretty reasonable.

If you do go the camper van route, don't forget to budget in diesel. NZ is a much bigger country than I really had an appreciation for before going. no idea about public transport. don't rely on a GPS, get a map too.

It also depends on what you want to do while there. I spent a lot on day trips and other things like Nevis bungee and going to see Milford Sound by helicopter. it was a trip of a life time so I really went to town on it. not sure of the final number but it was over 10K .

When I looked at the packages for Oz in 2013 they were in the region of 6K I think for a 3 week trip for just the test matches.

Of all the places you need to go to if you go, get to Queenstown.

I went on the last tour to New Zealand in 2005 and went with an official tour company Mike Burton's. I paid 4K for the three tests including the mid week games. I have been lucky enough to be able to go on the last two tours as well to South Africa and Australia. The last two times I did it the other way round so to speak and used companies from the countries where the Lions were touring. I save a load of money, got a better service and a lot better match day tickets. Its the only way I would do it. The UK official Tour Companies are a rip off. I'm already in contact with the company that sorted my last one out to Australia as they were fantastic. The lady I dealt with there is already put together packages.

I haven't been to NZ but went to Oz for the last tour. The package prices work out crazy expensive. We were lucky enough to have a friend over there who got our match tickets for us. If you don't mind roughing it a bit I'd recommend trying to organize everything yourself. We stayed in hostels mostly and got to do all the tourist stuff as well without being ripped off.

We booked our flights and accommodation with trailfinders and got a really good deal on the internal flights around Oz. I'd recommend talking to them before booking a package.

Spent 2 weeks campervanning around North Island with a 'Wilderness' camper van.... Would highly recommend as a research point if planning a holiday.

The 2 of us spent about €7k over the 2 weeks incl flights.

Spent four weeks in SA in 97, same in Oz in 01 & ditto in NZ in 05.

All trips self organised ..... Best way if you have the time.

Wouldn't do another one ....... Far too commercial these days .... No tour would ever match the SA one in '97. Test match tickets were £17 and we got them via our club in Wales. How times have changed!!!!!
