I would be very grateful for the advice of fellow boards.ie users.

A family member is in a very bad place right now, depression is taking over and this is going on for years. This has not responded to meds.

She has seen many GPs who really can't give her the time she needs. Of course they are busy but she really needs someone who really cares and will help her.

First and foremost could someone recommend (by PM) a very proactive GP in the Belfast area and then maybe a good psychiatrist or psychologist (for cbt)in that area too.

She does not mind paying privately.

    I'd appreciate any help received,

    Regards.

All she has to do is ask for a referral from her GP to the mental health services. There are a lot of CBT therapists employed in the NHS up there.

Otherwise, have a look at the How to Find a Therapist/Counsellor/Psychologist thread. The BABCP or IABCP lists accredited CBT therapists on both sides of the border.

    Many thanks for the reply.

She has no GP in Belfast at present. Would you suggest going to any GP and focus on the CBT etc for treatment or trying to get a good GP too??

That is her issue, trying to find a good and understanding GP who will give her the time needed....

I'm not sure how easy it is to change GP once you are registered with one on the NHS - maybe somebody from Northern Ireland will know.

But you can always ask the GP to refer you to a CBT therapist on the NHS.
