I am travelling to Moscow for a few days over Easter. Does anyone have any experience of the best way to bring spending money ? Is it better to bring cash(either Euro or Rubles) with you or is it economical to use an ATM card over there without getting screwed on fees ?
I'm just talking regular spending money for a holiday, not huge amounts of money.

You'll be fine taking euro and exchanging it for roubles. AFAIK roubles are not supposed to leave the country so make sure you exchange back to euro before departure as banks here will not want them, Thomas Cooks might take them but you'll get shafted on the rate. USD are also easily exchanged in Russia

You cant buy roubles outside of russia so you will need to change the euros on arrival. Can be done in the airport but you will have a choice of machine so you need to pick the ones provided by western banks..you will recognise the names. Banking halls are not for the tourist types.

AFAIK Russia has tons of foreign exchange outlets all over the place, that let you sell Euros for roubles. The euro will be widely accepted.

You aren't supposed to take filipino pesos or chinese rmb out of the country and I have. They are just currency controls the countries have because their currencies aren't freely traded on the markets

Not quite. These outlets will cream you on the exchange rate for the transaction. Also go off the beaten track and they get very scarce.
