In all fairness i dont know how there going to cope . Its no joke driving an artic up country lanes and fighting sleep. Over since the first of march here but reluctant to ask driver about holding milk. Think ill say nothing and let him come whenever he wants.

Not milking ourselves, but have a good bit of experience delivering feed so know the hours involved. There won't be enough tankers on the road and drivers available to collect it. I don't think people really realise the actual volume of milk thats goin to flood to the co-ops on the 1st. Don't think they'll be able to cope with it.

Was talking to a dairy farmer friend yesterday, the same guy that I am giving the heifer calf too. He has got another milk tank arriving during the week to hold extra capacity as he is going over with cows calving. I think he said that he can hold milk for 5 days ??
However I am looking forward to collecting the bull calves that we bought from him over the weeks and he has reared on.

They can't get Bellview running right at the moment as it is. It will be interesting on the first. If they had any sence they should have phased it in over a few days.

Our drivers going to let us hold 4 days, funny thing around our area is of the 7 dairy farmers within two miles of us we are the only place he can arrive in the morning at half 8 and get a load of milk all the other lads would still be milking with a couple only going for the cows...

Told our man he could collect away the last day, he said all milk has to be at intake by 12 noon on the 31st, they want to empty the silos as much as they can for the 1st

Excuse my ignorance but if the silos are full on the 31st does that mean the creamery could be considered over the quota.

Afaik it's when the milk leaves the farmers tank and is in the lorry then it's delivered so to speak. The silos are their to store the milk till processing whether they are full are not makes no.odds to the quota situation dg just want them empty to take the high rate of deliveries coming in in the first few days of april

Twill be grand. Let the processors worry about it. I see our driver showing a guy the tops for a 24 hr shift.

Once it goes through the meter in the tanker, no worries

Lot of drivers will be praying the rsa don't be out on April 1st, if you get caught gone over your allowed hours on your taco now you'll be landed in some serious trouble...

Management well paid to anticipate and deal with these types of problems.

think drivers on milk collection are given more leeway... probably not enough for next week though

How long you can hold milk will depend on the quality of it plus do you have the capacity. I have 2 old tanks I didn't sell so will hold milk for 4 days if possible. Cold weather coming might be a blessing too because these tanks won't be covered by a shed.

Question : do the coops get fined or just the farmer? If not what do they do with the money they make from this milk??.

Delivery drivers used to have different regs than long haulage due to the stop start nature of the job. Don't know if it still holds. The crew that collect here run 16 hours min this time of year anyway. Two drivers for each truck. Five trucks in all. They'll probably shift a million litres in the first twenty four hours. Most around here seem to be just taking it as it comes.

The coop pays you say 30 cent for Your milk and then you pay the fine of 28 cent. Milk still costs the coop 30 cent even though you only get 2 cent for it. That's my understanding of it!

what would tbc be like on 4 day old milk?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,966 ✭✭✭dzer2

Taco hours while collecting dont count only route to first pick up and from last to coop for driving most get done for work hours as they are over the working hours.

Neighbour here waaaay over. Holding from yesterday in tanks of farmers who have recently retired. Got tanks adjusted to cool milk sub 2 degree c. Coop milk adviser said he will inspect milk before collection and if not actually sour will allow collection. Milk will be hauled back and collected on my neighbours farm.
