Was wondering if anyone out there could help me decide. I'm in two mind in terms of buying a scope. I'm looking at two. One is the Burris eliminator 3 and the other is a vortex viper PST. The plan is to hunt long range. I like the idea of the eliminator because you point at the target, press the button, it calculates the bullet drop and then shows you which mil dot to use. What I don't like about it is that its electronic so I don't know how reliable it will be. The vortex on the other hand is similar to night force scopes not in the same league but the same principle. Very easy to adjust your 'zero' to the distance you need. The bad thing is your going to have to carry around some kind of spotting scope with you to know what distance the target is in order to adjust for it. I hope I don't regret asking this, but does anyone have any opinions (on this topic).?? Or any experience with either one of them especially the eliminator 3 as I've never got to use one personally so not sure what they're like apart from YouTube vids and reviews which can be biased.

Firstly, I've never owned the Burris eliminator 3 so I can't say anything for definite about that.

I do however own a Vortex Viper PST 6-24 x 50 in Mil/Mil. I've used a number of scopes for various different types of shooting and I must say I love the Vortex.

The reticle is brilliant (if you have the option go for the EBR-2), the turrets are solid and their Zero Stop option is very good, especially at night, as is their fantastic Illuminated Reticle.

The mag change is printed so that you can see what mag you're at while lying behind the rifle and there are fiber optic lines on the turrets to show you where you are in the dark.

With the price you would pay for one you should have money left over towards a good rail and rings.

If it ever breaks, whether through a manufacturing fault or your house burns down, or you accidentally drive over it the will fix/replace it under their VIP warranty. Thats why I go Vortex, they stand by their product and it's one hell of a product.

For judging the distance to target try a LASER range finder. You can spend anything from 100 - 1000 on one. Again Vortex do a good one for about the €400 mark. It's small and light, easy to use and comes with an illuminated reticle. It'll ping targets out to and beyond 1,000 meters depending on conditions. But the great thing is that it comes with an angle compensator which takes ion to account the angle to the target and gives you the adjusted horizontal distance to the target for accurate dialing.

Instead of relying on the computer in a scope you could get an app for your phone that will carry out the job of a ballistic calculator. I would recommend iStrelok but have a look online and see what suits you best. With this you can enter barometric pressure, temperature, wind, distance to target, angle to target, different types of ammunition etc and it will spit out your hold or your click adjustment.

The higher Mag on the Viper (24) v's that on the burris (16 i think) means that you will be able to see point of impact easier. With a good reticle, like that on the vortex, you can make quick second shot adjustments.

For me, it will always be Vortex, I can't recommend them highly enough. I have serious doubts about the Burris, but as I said I've had no dealings with them so it's all just speculation on my part from what I've read so I won't go there.

If you pick up a Vortex Viper PST 6-24X50 FFP Mil/Mil you will NOT be disappointed.

Either way, best of luck and let me know how you get on. If you go for the Burris then write a review and let us all know.
