Restricted Holding

    Hi Folks,

I am looking for a bit of advice from the farming community out there.

I recently reactivated my family's herd number which had been dormant for a number of years. Basically the land was rented for the last number of years but I recently decided to reactivate it and try and start farming again.

Anyway the herd number was activated last week and this week I have received a letter from the DVO stating the herd is restricted and it has about 10 clauses one of which is no animal is moved into or out of the holding except under the authority of a movement permit.

How do you go about getting one of these movement permits?

I haven't had a chance to buy any stock before they have restricted the holding and I don't know why its now restricted?

    Any advice greatly appreciated!

Ya, contact your local DVO. Your land prob has to be checked to make sure it's stock proof with a crush and handling facilities as your herd no. has een dormant for so long. Or else you're in a high TB area and have neighbours locked up?

    Thanks Kovu,

Maybe the neighbours are locked up with TB. I already had the Dept guy out looking at the place and shed / crush etc. He was happy enough and approved the herd number activation!

I haven't seen any of the letters they send out but I wonder if it's just giving you the low down on permits etc. No animal should be moved onto a holding in any case without a permit. Could they be just telling you the basics again?

A movement permit can be printed off by a seller if doing a private sale e.g. I could sell you an animal tonight and have a movement permit printed and sent off tomorrow. Marts do it via online CMMS.
