need a van for tipping about in and was looking at both a 02 sdi caddy and 01 tdi caddy both reasonable order with 160k miles or so but both going well . No DOE test on them..
What are these vans like, are they good, which is best.. guy looking €1000 for tdi and other guy looking 950 for sdi

Go for the Tdi providing it has a somewhat regular service history. Your mpg will be better and you'll be glad of the turbo when looking to tow something or even overtake something.

No service history and I'd go for the bullitproof SDi

what about price, are they far away considering no test

I'd be buying the van on merit and not on test. If you buy on merit the test will be fine. I'd much rather buy a car I've looked over thoroughly myself than buy a car blind because it has a test.

In terms of the Caddy they are very basic with relatively little to go wrong. Even less on the SDi. With so many breaking at the moment you could repair any fault no matter what for less than €500 so that's the element of risk, but that's an associated risk no matter what you buy.

It's hard to judge the price of either without seeing the van. A SDi Caddy can be worth it's weight in gold because of how reliable it is.

The tdi Caddy is a great van. Lots of power. Had two of them in our company and they were both very reliable never gave any problems. It is quite basic do its based on the Polo of that was around at that time. There is a Seat version of it called the Inca might be cheaper but it only came with the sdi engine. There is not a lot of power in that engine but as said above it is very reliable.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.
