    Hi all

Bit of a problem with a new build. I cant seem to get it just right. I have a small bit of play when I rock the front wheel but if I go to tighten the top bolt, the wheel wont turn side to side with ease. Is there a knack in getting it just right. Help please!!!

Have you replaced the top and bottom bearings or using the old one's still, and did you thoroughly clean everything when you had the steam and bearings out?.

Are the bearings seated the correct way around (beveled edge into headtube at top and bottom) and grease the hell out of them. I had no grease when servicing my winter bike last September so doused the bearings in Vaseline and they've been 100% buttery smooth since.

Btw, just a heads up on greasing.. I picked up a 500g tub of multipurpose grease in Halfords on the Malahide Road for €5- upstairs they had a tube of the same stuff, €8- for 150grams lol, go figure!.

Yep all bearings are seated properly, and all are brand new as it is a new self build job. I will have another look after work this evening. Thanks for the advice.

Ah you wanna get rid of that yoke, I might know a buyer ;) Is it a completely carbon fork or has it an aluminium top. Star fangled nut job?

Haha. Full carbon with a bung down the steerer tube. I need to check that the top of the steerer tube is not touching the underside of the top cap when its tightened. If so an extra spacer or a couple of mms of the steerer tube.

I was gonna say you probably just need a bigger spacer underneath the top cap.

I had that problem on one of my bike sai I added a 3mm spacer between the stem and top and it solved the problem.

Remember, before you tighten the top bolt (that pulls up against the bung) you must loosen the two bolts on the stem. If you don't then you won't be able to pull up against the bung properly. After you have the headset tightened properly you tighten the two bolts on the stem.
