eircom vs sky

    Hi

    Live in Laytown and have had mobile broadband for a number of years.

    Looking now for fixed broadband. Just got sky tv installed and planned to get broadband too. TV great but their customer service for broadband has been awful. Was with eircom years ago but line inactive.placed order on 3rd March and no one called me bac (sky I mean). I rang this week and told me that I can't get broadband as line is not working. They had my wrong address. They are now sending an engineer out on 7th April but I'm concerned that their service has been so bad so far for this and now think I will go back to eircom. I can get fibre optic broadband. Which would be better? I just got the feeling sky hadn't got a clue.

    Also If I decided to go back to mobile broadband (thinking three unlimited) would this work with sky box sets or does this have to be with fixed broadband?)

    Just replying to my own thread with an update.

    Sky broadband service has been horrendous. I still have not been set up. Should have been activated already but they now say there is a fault with the new eircom line . They are great at blaming eircom.

    Anyway they say they have to contact eircom to fix. I've now cancelled my "service" with sky. What's the point if they cant fix any issues. I'm going to go directly with eircom.


    No issues with sky tv but they have been utterly useless with broadband. My initial contact was early Feb!

    Just to add to this, Eircom deliberately acts slowly to make Sky look worse.
    When an Eircom line is not used for over 6 months, it becomes inactive.
    So if for instance you moved in to your house and the previous tenant had Eircom but left the line inactive, then what can happen is that an engineer unplugs your connection... essentially. This means that the eircom lines have one extra port as you were not using it. So if a neighbour becomes a new Eircom customer, then they are (in theory) plugged in and set up where you're port once was. This now means that there may not be any space for your lines to be reactivated so they do an NLP. NLP is a new line provider and they pretty much reconnect you up. It's a lot trickier and takes longer to do, but it also has a lot of safety assessments to it which can add more time again. They physically have to lay new lines for you so you can avail of these services.

    As much as Sky run of Eircom's lines, they are hardly good friends. Eircom is happy to get the business from the line rental fee but they're hardly going to do as Sky demands.... at least not without a little huffing and puffing!

    You're talking out your @rse being honest.

    Theyre selling a RAP and if they treat any line op unfairly or with a bias they get spanked with a large fine from COMREG.

    Lines go inactive with any provider and a new provide must be done to restore services. Sky seem have a problem with doing these for rural addresses and point customers to eircom for a year, but none of the other line operators have this issue and its purely sky being lazy/inept (or not being willing to pay the install fee).

    Sky and Vodaphone are essentially just reselling Eircom's service.

    The issue Sky have is they have to work within the Eircom lead times and are actually dealing with BT Ireland as a wholesaler (anyone who as Sky, check your IP) so there is an extra link in the chain.

    Sky's CS in relation to broadband is a bit lackluster tbh. They're fine for 80-90% of the issues but anything technical or requiring proactive chasing is going to come a cropper. The one thing I will give them is they do have a policy of not charging when they're not providing service.

    While I'd probably give Sky a 6.5/10 for broadband service Eircom and Voda would be lower still. Basically crappy broadband service is very common in Ireland due to their only being two providers. I've actually found UPC to be excellent but they've pretty limited coverage.

    As I'm fond of saying, can't beat Sky for TV but for broadband they're pretty meh. For any new line set up I'd always go Eircom, at least you're cutting out the middle man and dealing directly with the provider. Move to your selected service once the line is up and running and you're out of contract. DO NOT CANCEL with Eircom, you're simply porting. Don't listen to the 30 day bollocks, you just ring Sky or whoever and move services.
