Timing Chain Damaged

Have a 7 year old Astra and to my shame drove with little oil on a journey. Knew there was something wrong by sound of engine and brought it to mechanic today. He said the timing chain was damaged, that it would be expensive to repair and at that no guarantee problem would be sorted. So basically said I should be ok to drive on. Got it fully serviced in May and passed NCT. But obviously won't pass next NCT. Seems only solution is new car which I can't afford right now. What are people's thoughts on driving with a 'damaged' timing chain. Thanks.
