    Hi,

For those of you who are unaware that the site is undergoing some structural changes at present, there is a thread in Feedback dealing with it: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057395275

It is proposed to put Legal Discussion into the "Business" category because of the view that the law represents a business sector.

I have put my views forward and you can see that I disagree with that view: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=94762536&postcount=108

As I said to my co-moderators, I acknowledge my post is a bit thrown together but I didn't have much time to get this done.

I would be happy to see what the forum regulars (or lurkers/irregulars for that matter) think about the proposed change.

I'm not sure how a discussion of transgender rights or the length of sexual offenders sentences fits in with Business no matter which way you look at it.

In more general terms the whole business section seems a bit poorly thought out tbh.

As an afore mentioned lurker, if I saw legal discussion under a forum called business my first assumption would be that it was for those in the profession to talk shop. My 2 cents worth

I would assume that it was a forum for legal issues relating to running a business.

Law is a social science, involving observation of human behaviour, and co-operative action to regulate or respond to human behaviour. The fact that some people make a profession of practicing doesn't make it any more of a "business" than other social sciences like psychology or politics or economics or history or anthropology.

Plus, in this forum we actively discourage the "business" side of law, which is offering specific legal advice for reward. So "business" is pretty much the last bracket that you ought to place law in.

Would putting it in the biz section imply to many people that, much like the other forums in that category, it is there for advice rather than discussion and lead to more requests for advice vs topical discussions?

It is proposed to put Legal Discussion into the "Business" category because of the view that the law represents a business sector.

Law doesn't represent a business sector any more than sport does. Just because some football players are professional doesn't make it a sub category of business. Same applies to the law.

I agree with all of the above and it looks like the view had been accepted by those whose decision it is wrt the reorganisation.

This thread is probably redundant in a sense now but I'll leave it open for anyone who wants to add anything either here or in feedback.

    Thanks, folks.

Glad to see Legal Discussion being left as it is.

I agree with Pergrinus and other posters.

LD is far wider than business, and has a good following here

Agreeing with all the above, with apologies to any fellow Richar dPosner fans, in that Business not an ideal area. Law is more a Humanises subject which deals with the human condition and the proper ordering of society via the mechanism of law.

Might be a bit late now, but would the forum fit into the new politics category?

Politics and Law have often gone hand in hand and it would make it clear that it is for discussion of changes in the law, criminal cases, how judicial decisions affect peoples behaviour etc.

Equally, having a politics category which is just the current politics forum and subforums is, as Victor says, a bit small for a whole category.

So just thought id throw it out there, maybe a Politics and Law category, wih intermediary forums such as a crime and justice category? That way, things such as the recent trial result could be discussed and monitored by Law mods (not that im volunterring you guys for more work btw!).
