N4 Garda Speed Van (Liffey Valley)

Right on the drop from 80kph-60kph it always descends into chaos. People jamming their brakes, being cut off trying to get across to M50 south exit, I firmly believe this van being here causes far more problems than it solves. Just out of interest has that stretch always been limited to 60kph?

There is another thread on the subject here.

They are really blitzing the N4 these past few weeks. Can't recall seeing this volume of speed checks in over six years using the road pretty much every day.

    Have to agree

The van is in a location where anyone doing 80 that sees the 60 sign and starts to slow down will still be over 60 when they pass the van, this happened to me today and unless you jump on the brakes it is not possible for that speed change in that distance, its very dangerous for that van to be there and they are s hooting fish in a barrel, I feel I was driving as normal and would not have done anything different, If they send a letter to me with points I will fight it, just wish I had a dash cam.

They are probably looking to build up the speeding points stats for the weekly radio advert.

Is this city bound or outward bound? Will be travelling that way this evening and 60km is just a stupid speed limit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 215 ✭✭StoptheClocks

I was caught City bound. The location of the van is in the other thread linked above. I also want to fight the letter but don't want to pay a solicitor and go to court. Cases like these will more than likely get ignored by a judge.

Saw the van this afternoon from the bus.

That's the best place to be looking at it from

Yep no chance of a speeding ticket.

I saw the van there today too. Very dangerous spot imo. Everybody jumping on the brakes/ crossing lanes etc. I thought i was going to be hit from behind cause of this today as was on the brakes so hard cause of the car in front.
Fish in a barrel springs to mind. Makes a joke of the whole speeding campaign.

I passed this van today also, Was there a long time, 11am I passed on opposite side of dual carriageway and noticed it and on my way home at 3pm it was still there....must be a great spot parking there for 4 hours catching everyone at the last minute as soon as they approach the 60kph limit.

People coming out of Liffey valley onto the N4 don't even have an opportunity to see the 60kph sign since its further back up the N4 so therefore you would have no idea it was even a 60kph road. Would be really crappy getting done in that case.

If I will get a ticket AND I like to get one, I will bring them in Court and ask for damage.
Is a complete criminal, cowardice, indecent, out of any moral sense van trap setup !!!

I pressed brakes so hard to reduce from 80ish to 50 that when I look in the mirror cars behind me were doing ballet from one lane to another..
Also, while checking at the speedometer I was driving on both lanes !

This. You're trying to find a gap to merge into but because of the penchant of many drivers to tailgate you find yourself accelerating to get into a gap. You have to keep checking your mirrors so glancing at the speedometer can be an after-thought. THEN you see the white van with the wonkily applied speed camera signs...

Looking at rolion video, its well beyond the sign. I got the impression from reading here that they were at the sign. You can see the 60 sign from a good distance back and the van is the same distance again behind the sign. There's no need to slam on the brakes, you can easily get from 80 to 60 there with no brake action at all. If someone is up your backside, let them. The limit is the limit.

I don't agree with the van placement or the vans in general (See my other threads & posts) but its one of the few places in the country I agree with the limit as its a catastrophically badly designed junction.

Either way, with that much traffic, you are fairly safe if you are level with someone. Two cars in a picture and you have reasonable doubt. I'd encourage anyone caught here to request larger photos and attempt to cancel on technicalities if there are multiple cars in the frame.

No its not, unless you know its a 60 zone coming up when you see the sign it(about 31" on the video) takes about 4 seconds to slow from 80 to 60. The camera is totally there to screw people that are driving normally.

Lets hope you dont come across an unexpected set of traffic lights

They were at the sureweld today, have never seen them there before but was driving by last night and thought that's a nice place for them to pull in.

Is there any truth to rumours that a certain quota of speeding cases has to be met on a monthly basis - possibly leading to increased activity towards the end of the month? (I think a poster said this van very evident of late), Or just a load of hogwash?

    Hogwash.

The gardai don't get a red cent from tickets. It all goes to the governments central fund.

The Gardai.... Wages....Garda Yearly Budget.... (insert tax on everything form mars bars to kitchens.....) Governments Central Fund.

What i was trying to explain, is that the money form speeding tickets does not go DIRECTLY to the gardai.
ie, there are no Quotas, the Garda Budget does not correlate to the amount of tickets issued

They've been there plenty of times before; easy to catch people coming up over the brow of the hill.

The guy with the video was able to slow down from 87 km/h to 50 km/h within the allocated space all on the middle lane. Well done.

This mornings commuting frustration was a traffic jam before the Lucan flyover on the N4 caused by people slamming on before the speed van which is normally a short distance past the junction. Traffic after that was so free flowing.
