So I'm a student finishing a masters this year and have a job starting mid may with a contract until the end of october. During that time I'll earn €9120 gross and was wondering if I'll pay tax on it? Last summer I worked full time may-august and didnt pay anything aside from USC but considering I'm working essentially two extra months and will be on a euro extra an hour I was wondering if I'll be hitting any sort of threshold?

You will pay EE PRSI once you earn gross €352 per week.

You will pay USC once you earn over €12,012 per year.

You will pay PAYE once you earn over €16,500 per year. (assuming you get the basic €3,300 tax credits)

Sounds like you won't have to pay taxes however the payroll could deduct them anyway. I didn't earn over these thresholds during 2013 but I was deducted USC (which I was able to claim back after the end of the year)

So I reckon I'll be on about 380 per week, will the prsi be taken from the amount over the threshold or on the total amount do you know?

Do you know if I could still claim last years USC back? Had no idea I could as it was the only tax that came out of my paycheck last year but it may be different as I was private sector but the new position is public sector.

Once you go over the threshold in one week you have PRSI on the full amount. You can claim overpaid tax for 4 years after, just register on revenue online.
