Remove wheel lock-nut without key?

    Hi folks, one of the lads in the local has a predicament. NCT completed with a fail refusal on one tire. Needs to get it off but has no key to remove the locknut. Obviously I mentioned that he's screwed if he gets a puncture.

    Anyway, I'm attaching a pic for any suggestions !

    Alternatively, if anyone has one, I'd gladly drive across to borrow it for the time it would take to remove the 4 and just bin them and get a new set.

    Is there a dealer or locksmith nearby? They usually have various nut keys you can get a lend of/hire (particularly if you buy new lock nuts from them).

    If you have anyone that's a good welder its quiet easy to weld a good nut on the top of the stud and undo it with a normal socket.

    Happened to me before, I broke the key, so I bought 4 regular wheel nuts, dropped the car into the main dealer and got them to replace the lock nuts with the new regular nuts, they charged me E5.

    Motorfactors: "Nah, dont stock them"
    Locksmiths: "Nah, cant help"
    Local Indy: " Nah, main dealer is your only bet"

    Going to send him across to liffey valley to get the linked removers and see how we get on.

    It literally took them a few seconds per wheel, the mechanic probably would have done it for nothing had the owners daughter not been standing beside him at the time.

    I'd get four of them 19mm sockets, it'll save you shouting "bollix" the next time you go to use it

    Had same problem a few year's ago I just got a socket one size Smaller and extention and hammer and beat it on then just open with rachet

    Of course you're right Cletus. I'll be getting the 4, one of which will replace the original. The owner was chuffed as it turned out and I also noticed an original unused tyre in the boot. I know it sounds mad, but I reckon it's been in the boot since 2003 on the original steel wheel spare. So he's off to get it swapped over to the alloy rim in the morning and straight back to the NCT for the cert.

    FYI, I didn't use my new shiny box of halfords beautifulness ;). I'm afraid to get the bloody things dirty!

    That said, the Kennedy 1/2" is as good a set as I've ever used, albeit nowhere near the content of the halfords set.
