Tidal River\Canal Question

I hava a river/Canal that flows down behind my house and I have walked it a few times. I have spotted a few small trout (4-9inch) the last time I walked it. Its is a good clean water system but it is also tidal as it is about 2 miles from the coast. I walked it tonight for about 2 miles and I didnt see one fish. It got me wondering, when a river is tidal does it push the fresh water fish further inland when the tide is in? This river would rise by 2-4 feet each tide.

Is there sea trout or salmon running the river?

I have been told that sea trout have been caught in it going back years.
