Stolen Car - BMW 116i SE

i have the unfortunate job of announcing that our 116i SE 05 MH 8247 was stolen on sunday between the hours of 11.30 am to 4.00pm.

Our house in Rathfarnham/Knocklyon/Dublin 16 was broken into from the back window and rifled throughout. they took a few stuff around the place and made a mess.

In the process, they took the spare key to my 520 and also the 116, and took it that afternoon.

Please keep an eye out for it. my wife's insurance are being ok about it, and loaning her a car for 14 days. it takes 28 days to declare the 116 lost, and only then will they start processing what we could do. 14 days without a car for her and work might be tough, so will need to think about something.

Its a rare enough colour, gold/champagne. i have attached pictures of it.

Many thanks for keeping an eye out. its a quiet estate, im actually surprised, but will have to learn.

on the other hand, my own insurance because of the lost key are being absolute morons about it and im still fighting with them. im not insured for theft anymore, yet they dont have an approved garage to sort it out and are asking me to go out get quotes and they'll decide to a limit of 1000 (and i pay the rest). and because that wont be an approved garage, no replacement car for me (a garage said itll take two days).

    anyway.

I could be wrong but I think you have to go to BMW for the lockset and keys. They will register the new keys against the chassis number in case you loose them in the future. You could try getting the parts from BMW and getting an indy to fit them.

    Thanks Emeldc.

i have left this with the insurance company to sort out, as one of their approved garages said they would do it. what they will do is not up to me. i get the impression they want to just do a recode.

i am not in the position to argue which is which with them. if thats what they recommend, this is what should happen.

bmw are quoting me 1200 euros to do the whole thing. at the moment, we'll see what the insurance says depending on the garage.

in any case, we have both come to the conclusion we arent getting bmws anymore. im guessing because there were 2 in the driveway (although an 04 and 05 which are not worth much - total is much less than 10k), they might have thought we had tons of cash and jewellery in the house (which we dont).

therefore, once this claim is closed, my car is going (in any case i am doing over 600km per week and need a diesel) for possibly an older passat and even if my wife's is recovered, thats going as well, as understandably, she will not sit in anymore. im sad because the 520 just passed the nct friday.

she is pregnant, and due in 6 weeks, so you can imagine her stress.

    Did you get it back?

Sorry to hear that, will keep an eye out for it on my daily commute.

I totally understand your wife's feelings on the car. A car of mine (a relatively high spec Golf) was stolen years ago when I lived in Ranelagh. Got it back relatively untouched about a week later but couldn't get rid of it fast enough after that, I just couldn't bear the thought of some scrote being in my seat. :(

Lockdoctor is on the Naas Rd now , going from experince they'd cost half of what BMW would charge.

No, it was never found. Probably broken for parts. I would assume that if it was used for a joyride and torched, I would have heard about it.

any suggestions welcome. i am hoping the insurance get their act together. i dont mind where it goes, but are they insisting on locks, barrels and keys change?

i dont know what they want yet, so ive left the claim with them at the minute.

    basically they told me:

key stolen - your car not insured against theft anymore!

3 approved garages - 2 said no, hadnt rung the third and rang insurance. they then said that i need to source this myself, get a quote, send to them, they decide if yes, up to value of 1000, i pay extra. i also pay the excess, which they somehow decided was 300 more than what i signed up for (argued with them about this over 2 days before they realised they had car details wrong).

i am not interested in going to a garage not approved. its not my fault they dont have an approved one. im happy to use what they suggest, as using an approved garage means i get 100 less on the excess and i get a replacement car for the duration of works. non approved = excess at 250 + no car.

Ive sent the claim forms yesterday morning via email. ive yet to hear back. im not insured for theft, yet they are dragging their feet.

Its your car, not the insurance guys choice as to where it gets fixed.

Tell the guy you want to fix it that he can have the work if he gives you the hire car and the excess diff, it works!!!

Approved = cheapo repair, believe me.

ps we are (as a bodyshop) "not approved" but then again we where never "disapproved" we just didnt join into the funny little minimum wage type scheme they are running!

    Update

thanks for all the good vibes guys.

Car was found on saturday morning by the gardai. it was in an estate 1km away (actually opposite ours but its a big one). parked in a quiet cul de sac and locked up. nothing in boot touched, car appears in good order. my 520 spares key was in it (but new locks changed today).

car was towed to forensics and insurance's garage has it since yesterday, they will be changing locks.

relieved this has been found. other items they took have not been found in or around car.

so hopefully can now put this behind us and move on (safely behind alarms)....

Good stuff, glad to hear your sorted. My mothers 5 series was stolen in Knocklyon over a year ago now but never found.

Thanks, we dont know exactly when we are getting it back, but i get the impression the garage it went to wanted to do more work than needed. my wife is a very proper lady and refused to let them touch up things that were there before and not during the abduction, only the locks to be changed.

your man looked disappointed and not too happy she said.

it could have been with us by tomorrow, but im guessing more storage time is useful?
