I've been looking around for a second car for myself as I want to give the wife mine. I found a 01 Opel Corsa 1 litre with a blown head gasket for €380. Too good to be true, I know, but all I need is something píss cheap for the next few months. Typical driving would be from Athlone to Leixlip and back, Monday to Friday.

Would it be worth my time and money to purchase the car and have it repaired or am I better to forget it and move on? I might be answering my own question by moving on to something else, but I don't have a couple of grand to be forking out on a car I'll only use for work. To cut a story short, I want something I can drive until it drops dead and move onto something else.

No it isn't. Who knows what other jobs it needs doing. They are pretty dreadful cars too.

Better off spending 800-1000 on a old Corolla or Micra, even a Primera. A Corolla or Primera will be far more pleasant to sit in too driving from Athlone to Leixlip.

Shall have a look and see what I can find. The Corsa would be tempting if I had the money to throw at it.

Not easy to do the head gasket on a 01 Corsa. It's a timing chain engine. When you machine the head (normal practice when doing head gasket), it makes the engine a fraction lower, so timing chain needs to tension more and also the bolt holes for the timing chain cover may no longer line up.

Personally I'd pass on that one. Doing a head gasket on some other type of car may be a viable option, but I wouldn't on one of these.

If budget really tight, try for an older micra / starlet (not pretty but will get you from A to B). Buy on condition, not age. Also if looking at classified adverts, expect to look at a lot of crap before you find something decent.
