Need someone with fast upload speed

    Hi,

I've recently started to produce Gameplay videos for YouTube and I've stumbled upon a small problem - mainly my upload speed.

The videos I produce are long and high quality, therefore the file size is quite large - usually between 80 and 100 gigs per file (yes, it's encoded correctly)

However, my upload speed is limited to 3meg, and there's no ability to get faster at the moment.

I'm wondering if someone out there has a decent upload speed and is willing for me to use it once every 2 weeks so I can upload to YouTube?

I'm based in Dublin West, and if anyone in the area has a fast upload connection and doesn't mind me hogging it for a few hours every 2 weeks or so can you please get in touch?

    Thanks!

The Dublin city libraries have free wifi, you could try the speeds there if all else fails?

    Thanks for your reply.

I really doubt any free wi-fi hotspots would have the bandwidth available to manage such large uploads. I'm looking for someone with a fairly decent upload speed so uploads don't take 3 days of solid uploading.

I'd help but I live in Carlow haha :pac:

I imagine Dublin city libraries would have the bandwith. I have been in their libraries 10am-8pm with no issues with their wifi at all. The one in the central library is really good

Yes, but these are 100 gigabyte files I'm uploading. Takes approx 3 full days on a 3meg connection. I'm sure the wi-fi speed in Dublin City Libraries is great, but just like your home connection I'm sure their upload speed is a fraction of their download speed.

I don't think I'll find a solution, i.e. a very fast solid fast upload speed, to my issue from a 'public' source.

    But thanks for your suggestion!

There's no-one nearby with a UPC connection? They'd usually have 10 megs upload.

Just sneak into a college campus. They all have either 1GB or 10GB symmetric.

I'm also sceptical that your encodes are correct unless its 4K 60fps, which nobody will be able to play back anyways.

You're solution for this should be to re-encode the videos using something better then you are using, your file size is just overkill and its likely Youtube are massively compressing them once they are uploaded anyway.

Actually Youtube have had 60 fps videos for a few months now. The file size the OP has could possibly still be reduced though. Maybe by adjusting the audio settings he/she encodes at.

If you have a friend or family with VDSL with full 20m/bit upload that is an option as well. Although it would be better if you have a muscular PC to compress the hell out of your video first though. Modern codecs do work wonders. I recently uploaded a couple of hundred gigs of red format video which are crazy quality for a friend. It worked very well!

Encoding videos at a lower bitrate isn't an option.

The videos are encoded correctly - H.264 progressive scan 1080p at 50,000kps bitrate - excatly what YouTube wants for optimum streaming. The issue isn't my encoding, which I have been doing for years, the videos do be 6+ hours long hence the large size.

UPC in my area is limited to crap 30meg download and 3 upload so that isn't an option.

I almost dread to ask, but what warrants a 6 hour long video?

Full lenght Playthroughs and Gameplay videos - My channel already gets over 4 million minutes viewtime every month so someone must enjoy them!

Back on topic - can anyone help getting me access to a decent upload connection? :)

Have you spoken to your internet provider about the speeds? I assume the 3 MBs upload is through a wired connection. Maybe moving to another company could improve the situation.

It's UPC, and their local segment isn't upgraded for the more recent speeds, hence 3 megs up is the limit.

I have efibre from eircom and my upload speed is 15mb

Wow, things certainly have come a long way in North Korea, if only the eircom network here was as good as that :(

Not true. I was in Dublin Airport a couple of weeks ago and I was getting 40Mb down/ 24Mb up on WiFi. Not sure about the stability of it because it would take about 10 hours to upload it there.

If you were to upload this on someone's UPC or eFibre connection, it could take between 10 - 13 hours. If I lived near you, I would not allow it without charging you for using my 20Mb upload (actual speed is about 18.70Mb), as you would be using my electricity for 13 hours and I would not be uncomfortable having a complete stranger in my house for that long.

You need proper gigabit fibre for a file that large. 1 gigabit would chew through that it 14/15 minutes.

go to a net cafe or pub with free wifi. most pubs in dublin have either efibre or upc

McDonalds and Topaz also have free WiFi there, there's another few minutes done, grab a double cheese or coffee while you wait.

Don't Eircom, Vodafone or UPC have fibre connections in Dublin?

Footprint is probably around 60-80% of premises at best right now, still being rolled out. And a portion of them will only get 7_1 or 15_3.

Not sure if you're trolling - but on the off chance you're not -

You're not doing 4k videos here - a perfectly adequate youtube setting for 1080p video is 8,000 kbps - tbh for most gameplay videos 5 Mbps 720p videos would do.

    https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en

The 50 Mbps figure you're talking about is clearly marked as "enterprise quality internet connections" - which you don't have and are not going to get on a home connection in Ireland in 2015.

For comparison BBC broadcast their HD stations at a max of 17 Mbits, but often at 12 or as low as 8.

50Mbps for a gameplay video is silly.

    Isn't the average upload speed on 4g 12megs+ ?

You could always sign up for 4g + unlimited data and tether your phone to your laptop/desktop.

How reliable that would be though, I can't say. I also think there might be a "fair use" policy in place for 4g. Even with unlimited and you'd probably blow through that in a day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭RossD12

Never trust 'unlimited mobile data'. Their fair usage policy's can usually be up to 15GB, or maybe even a 7.5GB usage limit
