1984 Golf Convertible (MK1) Oil Light and Headlight Warning Light problem

Hi all, I have a 1984 VW Golf convertible which I'm getting ready for NCT next month. The oil light is continuously on, faint but on. When I go to start the car the light flashes as it should but when I start the car it stays on. It is not at full brightness when the car is started. I have changed both the high and low pressure switches and the oil pump has been changed also. A new sump gasket was fitted along with oil filter and oil change. I am sure that the oil pressure is fine but have not checked this as I do not have a pressure guage.

Regarding the headlight warning light, this does not work. I have checked the bulb in the dash and this is fine (used a 9v battery to check it and it works). I have power coming to the 14 pin connection to display cluster and when I put a meter to pins on cluster (pin2 and pin 7) there seems to be continuity but the light will not work when power is present.

I would appreciate any advice to rectify these problems.

    Thanks.

You really need to get a pressure test done on the oil.

The pump could be giving good flow but any worn bearings in the engine would just let the oil p1ss out back to the sump and the pressure would drop off.

About tge light if you've power going to it it might be worth checking the ground connections on the dash.

@teediddleyeye that's what I'm starting to think too. Will get it to garage next week and see what they say.

Will check ground on dash and see if it makes a difference.

    Thanks for advice

Well, just had the oil pressure test done and mechanic says there isn't a problem with it, all readings came back fine.

Only thing left now is electricial. The oil light on the dash is very faint, you can only see it if you really look for it or if the car is in a dark place (eg garage etc).

The fact the Headlight warning lamp isn't working on the dash either makes me think that it could be a earth or something along those lines. Will keep looking I guess.
