I bought one of these a while back - http://www.thomann.de/ie/cort_action_a_bass_bk.htm

    Cracking little bass.

You could do worse than a Squier jbass or pbass. I know some people have a thing about Squiers but I've been giving lessons for nearly 12 years and I've never seen a squier that wasn't reasonable value for money

If you want to go the second hand route I can strongly recommend the Tribute G&L L2000.

I have one, and they are seriously under rated basses. There is one for sale on "Adverts" for slightly more than your budget. For an extra €100 or so, it is light years superior to any Fender Squire. The neck may be a bit chunky for you though. It is 1.75" at the nut. If you can live with that, then this is a no brainer IMO.
