Bathroom basins and baths with no overflow?! Am I missing something here?

We're doing some pretty big renovation work and the main bathroom is one of the big overhauls that is happening.

We've been hunting around for freestanding baths and counter top basins. What I can't for the life of me get my head around is the amount of baths and basins that come with no overflow. Surely every bath and basin should come with an overflow for safety reasons? Typically nearly every design we like has no overflow.

What are people doing to safegauard against overflowing or are they just living life on the edge?

(I have a 1 yr old and 1 on the way, that's why i have worries about these things)

Until i moved to Ireland i had never seen a bath or basin with overflow. I personally hate it in the bath - i can never get the water deep enough to have a good soak and putting your foot up to try and block the overflow doesn't work all that well.

With little ones i would presume the water level would be very low that the overflow wouldn't come into it and they would be supervised at all times anyway. Remember it is possible to drown in as little as 10cm of water.

They have been discontinued due to water meter charges, baths are a thing of the past.
