As far as I know he had been based out in South Africa in recent years. His previous Sunday afternoon radio shows on TODAY FM sounded as if they were pre-recorded as he usually only ever provided an e-mail address as a means of contacting the show with requests/dedications. There were a few ocassions in the past when technical problems demonstrated that this particular show was not going out live but I suppose TODAY FM had never claimed it to be a live show either - we just come to expect and assume that such shows are automatically live!

Jim used do a lot more voice-overs such as the intros to News at the top of the hour when TODAY FM first relaunched after replacing the former Radio Ireland original branding. Jim O'Neill made his name on radio with his old Drivetime slot with a popular character called "Thing" on weekdays broadcasting on the old RTÉ Radio 2 station back in the early 1980's when it would have enjoyed a huge listenership pre-independent commercially licenced stations that launched from 1989 onwards.

After having seen old visual photo shots from the RTÉ Stills Library of this popular DJ in his prime, it is interesting to see a more current view of Jim O'Neill after all these years. I wonder does he miss South Africa now or if he is delighted to be back living & working in Ireland again?

Ah yes, he is very easy listening and a pleasure to hear especially when he is sharing some interesting details of various artists. O'Neill has a very unique quality and style and someone I listened to growing up as a kid on the former RTÉ Radio 2.

He would have been a huge DJ alongside the likes of Larry Gogan, Jimmy Greeley, Marty Whelan, the late Vincent Hanley, the late Gerry Ryan, Barry Lang, the late Tony Fenton, Ian Dempsey, Michael MacNamara (aka Micky Mac) John Clarke, Andy Ruane, Dave Fanning, BP Fallon, Mark Cagney, Mike Moloney, Nails Mahoney (aka Brian McColl), Gerry Wilson, Lorcan Murray and so on
