Utopia, all our counties being in with a chance of winning Sam and Liam in the same year.

Here is my opinion of who the top ten dual counties are at present

    1 Cork
    2 Dublin
    3 Galway
    4 Tipperary
    5 Clare
    6 Waterford
    7 Wexford
    8 Limerick
    9 Offaly
    10 Laois

Realistically only the top three have any chance of winning the double in the foreseeable future!

AFAIK only Cork have ever done it and twice. 1890 and 1990. but.............wont have to wait for 2090 as 2015 there is a realistic chance of both cups heading south. I said 'CHANCE' .

Kerry are ahead of Laois, Offaly and probably on a par with Waterford.

They are one of the stronger Christy Ring cup teams and won division 2a of the league last year so would hold their own against Laois and Offaly- while the Laois and Offaly football teams wouldnt hold their own against Kerry

I think tipp have a fair outfit for the football. Young team but have a lot of underage success, can only see them getting better.

Didn't Offaly get to both finals in 81 and 82. They stopped kerrys 5 in a row in footbal one year and won the hurling the other year.

    Or am I imagining things

The difference between the OPs present list and your evoking of something that happened over 30 years ago is the key here!

Kerry are ahead of Laois, Offaly and probably on a par with Waterford.

Would not agree, lets see if they get promoted to Division 1B where all the teams you mention above are at present!

Most of those top counties have big populations, easy for them to be a good dual county

I have more respect for the likes of Offaly, Laois, Westmeath, Carlow who are dual counties with small populations where the hurlers are nearly more successful

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 344 ✭✭wackokid

Not a question of respect, that's a whole different subject.
The question posed by the guy/gal wot started this thread is who are the counties with the best chance of winning both cups in the same year.
Yes........Offaly came very close in the early 80s but that was then, this is now.
Tipp is a hurling county, same as Kilkenny and will produce good minors now and again.
Galway probably the only county other than Cork who consistently produce top class senior teams and would never rule them out.
Great GAA county as is Clare if they could stop shooting themselves in the foot.
Kerry for the double? you are having a larf.......

I would put both Limerick and Wexford ahead of Waterford. Though they're hurling teams are of similar standing they're football teams are probably better so tipping the balance.

I would gladly substitute the word "admiration" for "respect". All our teams are to be admired as they, as amateurs are putting great effort and energy into our games for the pleasure of millions of people year in year out!

It is likely that both Wexford and Limerick will be relegated to Division 4 this year!

No, I mean as a dual county- if you were to take our football ranking and hurling ranking added together- it would be lower than that of Offaly and prob Laois aswell

Missing the point completely sure only cork on that list have a chance at the double

Cork also went close around 1999?... Losing the football final afaik.

Galway were the last to go close I think, back in 2001 losing the hurling final.

At the moment, you could possibly add Louth to that list. Their footballers and hurlers are equally as bad as each other, and one set of players have as much chance as the others of achieving All Ireland success

For the purpose of this exercise neither Kilkenny or Kerry can be considered as dual counties as they do not enter teams in both codes into the senior championship.

I agree where football is concerned Limerick are above Waterford, in hurling Waterford will be promoted at the expense of Waterford!

so it's only on the league you are basing it so? Seeing as Wexford and Limerick both did better than Waterford in the championship last year. And both of their football teams are also better than Waterford (even if both are still at the lower end of things)

only cork, offaly, and Galway have won both over the last 50 years , outside of them 3 it will be 100 years or more before you will see any of the other counties do it, Dublin maybe out of the other counties.

I'd acyually give Dublin the best chance outside of Cork, certainly well ahead of Offaly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 230 ✭✭homeofhurling

course they would be ahead of offaly footballers in division 4 hurlers as poor as they ever were, but the likes of clare and tipp waterford and laois are as far off winning the double as offaly are,

Yes only the league in the main, all counties take the early games seriously, when promotion or play offs, or not being relegated is secured can counties try out new players. The league has become a serious competition in recent years. It should be a good game in Nowlan Park this Sunday and an even better one if both teams have to meet in a relagation battle!

thats some seriously strange logic. Ranking teams based on the league and not championship.

to be fair, Kerry are miles off Liam but could easily win Ring and Sam in the one year. That'd be a pretty respectable double.

Last year is history a good time to review it, taking both league and championship into consideration would be next September.

Limerick are out of it as far as promotion is concerned. This question will be truly answered today as Wexford are at home to Waterford and the winners will be promoted to Division 1A.

Tipperary have done it twice also in 1895 and 1900
