New film from Saul Dibb, Director of the Duchess and Bulletboy based on the book from Irène Némirovsky (the writing of the book is far more interesting and would have made for a better film imo).

Onto the film, it was a fine film nothing out of this world and not the Oscar tipped film it was announced for during the summer of 2014. Saying that some great performances from Kristen Scott Thomas, Ruth Wilson and especially from Sam Reilly (if the film was based around his character it would have been a better film).

I thought Michelle Williams was fine, her character isn't the most interesting and I found things outside her character far more interesting. Matthias Schoenaerts (how many films is he in in the next few weeks, I think I saw him in two trailers before this film started) is also fine but nothing in the same ballpark as his performances in Bullhead and Rust and Bone.

One surprise that Margot Robbie was in this, this must have been done before her big break through cause it was a nothing role and I don't think she would have touched this now if it wasn't for William's main role.

Nothing Special but a fine two hours.

I haven't read the book, so I could only approach this as a stand-alone movie, and I'm afraid that I fell asleep halfway through. If you took away the remarkable back story of how the novel came about, nobody would give this a second glance. Sure, Kristen Scott-Thomas is great and Michelle Williams was competent but I couldn't for one moment buy the developing love story between the put-upon young wife and the tender-hearted German officer.
I guess it's all about managing expectations: if you came across this on the TV on a hungover Sunday, you'd be quite happy with it; but don't go booking a babysitter in the hopes of seeing something that will change your life.

It was alright. Kinda dull. The main actress was woeful.

Yeah it wasn't Michelle Williams greatest performance, nothing really made her character stand out for me. I think its more down to the script more then anything rather then Williams been woeful. She's okay in it. Really was expecting more from the film.
