Hoping to get some advice.. I'm looking to buy an automatic and would love to hear some recommendations.. I had a Honda jazz/fit a couple of years ago and found it pretty good, so that's a consideration for me, but is there any other good autos out there?

My budget is around the 4/5k mark, I really don't want to spend anymore than that! I do an average amount of travelling (nothing crazy), and just want a comfortable automatic that doesn't guzzle the fuel and would need a 5 door... Any advice would be greatly appreciated..

Oh jesus what the hell is that thing? How anyone could decide that purchasing it would be a good idea is beyond me. Holy sh*t, the guys at Nissan must have been on the funny stuff that day.

Thanks Duke, I'll have a look at the Yaris, I agree with the other poster though, I wouldn't like the second car at all!

I am afraid the smaller engined automatics are a terrible driving experience, with the exception of perhaps the 1.5 litre Prius.

Ive seen a few of them around and think they look interesting, no idea what size engine or the space inside them is like. Im sure thats the cube but Ive seen a few others like that, which I could not identify.
Is the fit/jazz the same car?
As for autos, I think the jap import ones are better, better interior spec and trim, lower mileage (going by the cleanliness of them engines/interiors, I find most seem plausible).

As for them being a terrible driving experience, it really depends on the driving you are doing, more than adequate for most driving in this country.

    Hi Cerastes..
The fit is the import I think, I'm struggling to remember lol.. As I said in my OP I did have a fit up to a couple of years ago and never had any issues, though I did feel at the time it was eating the petrol, in hindsight I had only moved from Dublin to Virginia Cavan, so was possibly just not used to the fact that I wasn't only 'city driving'.

Seen a 2005 Jazz online and it was priced @ €4999, asked the garage what's the lowest they'd go and they said €4500, really don't know if I'm getting a good deal or not? It is a 10 year old car and I'm wondering am I crazy?!

    That's overpriced imo.

Seems about par for the course for an 05 Jazz from a garage.

Thanks I'll take a look at the Prius.. In relation to the jazz do you think I should push it for lower than €4500? Thanks

Wouldn't really like the look of the Suzuki to be honest, but thanks :)

Thanks Bazz, I'll take a look at them too.. Can anyone explain briefly what's 'hybrid'? I like the look at the prius and it's hybrid!

A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is a type of hybrid vehicle and electric vehicle which combines a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) propulsion system with an electric propulsion system. The presence of the electric powertrain is intended to achieve either better fuel economy than a conventional vehicle or better performance.

I've had to drive Automatics since 1989 due to a leg injury, Had loads of Auto cars,
The Good & bad, both cheap and expensive cars,
I've got a 2004 Toyota Yaris 1.3 Auto and it's a good enough car, a little cheap and cheerful thing.
It's great for what I need, It's nice to drive and it's very roomy inside for a small car. A fill of petrol is roughly €50 / 38.5 litres and it does around 525km on that. I've heard the newer model Yaris 06> has a Multi-Mode gearbox that can be a little problematic but I've never driven one.

I've a Audi A3 Auto as well and that's very good, 1.6 TDi with seven speed tip tronic although that was a little more to buy.

Thanks Bazz, I appreciate your information. I'm really undecided, I think the jazz is a bit over priced @ €4500, and I think I like the Prius.. It looks pretty comfortable which I need (back injury). So would a hybrid be a good idea like?!

Also note that the Gearbox on the Jazz you drove was a CVT (1 variable gear) and would be smoother than a normal automatic with Multiple gears. IIRC the Prius has a CVT too.

I think the auto box in the Japanese imported Jazz/Fit is a conventional torque converter as opposed to the CVT box fitted to the European Jazz.

The only non CVT autos were early US models I believe. I've a Jap Fit, and its the CVT.

Well I'm looking at the Jazz in a few minutes, the guy selling the Prius got back and said he'd reduce price if I'm interested from the €4700 he said he'd only accept last night.. Only problem is I'd need to get a mechanic to give it the once over as it's a private seller as opposed to the Jazz which is a garage..
