Hi everyone, i'm in 3rd year of my accounting degree. I was wondering would it be better to do a masters sponsored by one of the Big 4 or to graduate and start immediately with one of the big 4 firms. I'm would really appreciate you're opinions/experiences. Also I will be 20 years old when graduating so would it be better to get an extra year in college.
    Thanks in advance

Obviously it's hard to compare when we can all only do it one way or the other but currently preparing for the CAP 2 exams in June I would say do a Masters. The CAP 2s are intensive and it's a struggle to try and keep everything going.

And if you'll only be 20, I would definitely recommend it. You'll be working for long enough.

Probably better to get the extra year in College, unless money is an issue. You will be working long enough

Go for the masters. I wish I did with hindsight. Its another qualification to put on the CV which (if in the worst case scenario) you dont pass the FAE is better than saying you have passed CAP2.

Most important point is that this really doesn't matter except for the very short term. Once you qualify that will be what people look at and the masters will just be a very minor footnote on the cv. It's really only useful if you want to go back to academia at some stage.

It's nice to be doing the CAP2s on their own instead of trying to work and do them. Don't think this is an easy option though. The quantity and quality of the work required is a major step up from degree level and there's much less scope for socialising. It's a long slog of a year. Basically only do it if the idea of another year of college appeals to you. If you'd rather be out working then do that.

I did the masters and found it very rewarding myself from a personal point of view. It just depends on the person though, there's no right or wrong answer. I was 20 when I finished the degree but that's not relevant. The fact that I was a bit immature probably was though.

    .

You have to do the work experience as well, and if you do CAP 2 you get to start that a year earlier than you would if you did a Masters.
