    Hello!

I'm currently looking for a diesel car / jeep for around 2k.

Was thinking of doing a bit of a roadtrip through Europe for a few weeks so would be great to get something relatively reliable and decent on fuel costs (I know that may be difficult on my budget)

So far was interested in Focus 1.8 Diesel / BMW 320D / Landrover Freelander. There are a few of all of these about with NCT's till 2016.

Any advice on models to look for?

    Many thanks.

Peugeot 406 diesel. Comfy, reliable, economical and you'll get far more car than you would a 320d.

2k doesn't buy a lot. Toyota Avensis . For 1.5k. Hold back 500 euro for tyres battery minor repairs

Land rover free lander wouldn't be my first choice in reliability.
Drive a BMW myself but sub 2k probably has a few niggles especially in diesel as they are more desirable.

If the volvo is the older model which i think it might be then it uses the 1.9dci renault engine.
    So may not be that reliable,I would look at ,passat,peugeot 406.skoda octavia,toyota avensis,Mazada 626.

Great, thanks. Hard to decide on one, would be nice to get something that would do for a road-trip and then also work as a day to day car when back in Ireland. I'll look through those recommendations and see what's around.

Not a fan of them at all, visually anyway. I wouldn't have thought Hyundai would be reliable either.

Yeah they don't look great alright, not to sure about reliability

Even though I'm a BMW fanboy, I will agree with this. The 320d is unreliable, not very economical and not refined well. Although it will be faster than a 406 or a Passat TDI.

A 330d couldn't keep up with my old 406, let alone any 320d or any 1.9/2.0TDI engined car. Faster my arse...

Another vote for a 406. Or a big floppy Xantia. Preferably with the 1.9D-Turbo lumps. Indestructible, comfy and well refined for old stuff. Just pick the best example you can find

All the parts (apart from a boost gauge, 2 speakers and radio) that went into it were stock ;)

And whats wrong with the Renault 1.9dci engine. Renault diesels are actually quite good and reliable too. I know a few people who have had a Renault with this engine and they never had a problem with it. Its petrols that Renault were not great at.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

I have done a banger rally for the last 3 years. 3000 miles over 4-5 days.

I wouldnt spend 2k, more like 500 and buy a banger to drive around europe. You'll get a Saab 900/93, Volvo S60 around 1998/99 for that kind of money. Also diesel around the continent is more expensive. If the car fails, dump it and fly home!

Unless volvo replaced turbo egr valve all the oil seals and use something other than a chocolate gear box then they an't any more reliable than the infamous laguna II

Get an A6, 98 to 00. Unbreakable 1.9tdi afn or avg. Big comfy bus does 50mpg, big boot, lots of equipment. A6 changed to pd engine early 2001 but there are a few early 01's with the old bosch pumped engine.

has to be the Peugeot 406 or citroen xantia. bullet proof diesel engines. all the same make sure you keep a few hundred spare just in case. you will have the comfort as well

http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/peugeot-406-1999-2-0-hdi/8910235?offset=6 this has the newer hdi engine. should get it for 1000/1100. plenty of spare change

Were not selling it, but we have a 1997 Volvo V70 2.5 diesel. It's a brilliant car, and we drive it all over the country without any problems so if your looking for something cheap that will do the job, then a good V70 diesel is your answer. I've just looked on done deal, and there's a few that you might like. Best of luck

they are dirt all you have to do is look on donedeal and see how many are under 500 euro and read why. turbos injectors pumps and all electrics.

If you look on done deal there are ones to be had for around 2000 Euros

Rover 75 diesel or MG ZT diesel (same car) can be got for well under 2k. Comfort, toys & reliability can't go wrong:P

I would be sceptical about a rover. A friend of mine had a Renault Scenic diesel, and he loved it as it was great for driving to England on regular occasions. Apart from that you need something safe when driving abroad. From experience. Back in I was the front seat passenger in a 2000 golf, and was in a bad car accident so much so that the car was written off. I was lucky and walked away without any serious injuries. The only one was to my ankle, and that was it. So from a saftey point of view, I would certainly recommend a golf as well as the V70. But you need something safe and reliable with a few years or more left in it.

On the Rover 75 / MG ZT Apart from the 1.8 k series petrol engine which could have headgasket issues if not minded the larger petrol variants and the diesel (2 litre BMW unit) are very reliable. I've put 80,000 miles on diesel in under 4 years without any serious issues apart from general servicing and wearing parts i.e. brake pads, tyres etc.

For what the OP is looking for and for very handy money he could get a 2002-2004 Rover 75 or MG ZT diesel from 2k and petrols from much less. He'd have more comfort and power in one of these than most other cars mentioned here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 91 ✭✭ourheritage

Comfort and power, but what about safety? The comfortline versions of the 1998 - 2004 Volkswagen Golf and 2001 - 2005 Volkswagen Passat are extremely comfortable, and safe as well, and as I mentioned about my experience with the golf. I was in a friends 04 Passat comfortline, and I found it extremely comfortable. Both these cars are safe as well as the V70. How well would Rovers do in a crash???

    2001 Rover 75:

    2001 VW Passat:

Both have similar crash test results so the perception that German cars are safer because they feel more solid is just that, a perception.

The Renault Laguna got 5 out of 5 stars and are cheap, and are good judging by other peoples experiences that the Renault diesel engine is quite good, so maybe that's worth considering when it comes to safety. I am certainly impressed by the Rover 75, and it would make me consider one,
