    Hi,

Is there any places doing these that post basic rates? everywhere I get in touch with is a quote, and depending on how long it will take.

Last time I recorded somebody offered to do 2 tracks for 150e, took about 4hrs and came out rubbish, timing's off and it was cut and pasted together, one song didn't start till about 20 seconds into the recording so looking not to repeat the same mistakes.

Willing to pay a fair price, just it feels like roulette choosing who to go with, 2 demos recorded over the years haven't like either of them, either the levels, reverb where I don't want it, drum machine that sounded much etc.

Typically you get what you pay for in my opinion.

4 hours to get two tracks down is nothing, by the time you have set up and EQ'd the drums you're coming close to that time so you can't expect to get good quality recordings with a decent mix on two songs.

You can be clever about how you record things and what order etc track will save time but if you want to get good recordings multiple takes will be required even if you're all on form.

Regarding timing issues and all that, the engineer should catch it but if you don't notice it yourselves when you're playing you gotta own up to that and watch out for it in the future.

in regards to timing I meant, the song didn't start on the recording I recieved for about 20seconds, so you have to wait that long to hear the songs.

    Any studio's you'd suggest?

If you're on a budget, as most of us are, you could always keep an eye out for the likes of windmill lane or music centre students looking for bands to record. some of those lads churn out decent mixes and you'll be working in a decent studio for free.

I always use the Hive Studios in Kilcoole. €120 per day.

Most studios have a day rate, an album rate, an unsigned rate and a record company rate plus deals. Thats why you need to make contact for rates.

Its not really the studio's fault if there are performance issues... its the band. There isnt time in 4 hours to correct many things, redo or use ProTools or Cubase to edit to improve timing.
In order to get some degree of quality into a recording you need to be allocating 1 day to record 1 song and probably some hours another day to mix.

    Thats life!

I've worked with a LOT of bands who got cheap time in a good studio like Grouse but used students to do the work. It invariably ends up sub-standard no matter how sophisticated the equipment is!

If you're Dublin-based, I absolutely could not recommend Ciarán Parnell strongly enough.

Dirt cheap (€75 per day for full band, less for acoustic), knows exactly what he's at, lovely chap, and ties everything up for you in terms of mixing and mastering at little to no extra cost. A side project I did had him as the sole engineer and we managed to knock together three tracks in two days.

He works out of Volt Studios and his bedroom (both Northside). Absolutely no-brainer for anyone looking to record on a budget.

Edit: not sure if he still posts on that site I linked to, but his active Twitter handle is @ciaranparnell.

how about you spend 40 to 100 hours producing your track and stop expecting quality productions for less than micky d's wages. at 10 euros an hour i could produce you a track album quality in 40 hours. i reckon ill get a job in burger king instead tho, it would pay better, u obviously think alot of your music to do a track in four ****in hours. wake the **** up and stop wasting peoples time. ****ing **** on this site
