Had a forester in last year felling trees and he said he found a chickenhawk nesting and avoided the area. Im in a very rural part of clare and love attracting wildlife to my farm but Ive never heard of a chickenhawk. the only references I can find online are US based. Does anyone know what its called here

I presume they meant either a Sparrowhawk or a Buzzard. The Americans name their birds of prey a bit differently, so I'm not sure which to be honest. Both nest in trees.

Glad to hear the forester left it alone btw!

It's a Sparrowhawk .... Not so many years ago when farming was less specialised and it was the norm to keep different animals and fowl it was commonplace to see a hen with chickens around a farmyard and the chicks were what a Sparrowhawk considered handy takeaway.. So, in parts of the country a Sparrowhawk is still sometimes referred to as a Chickenhawk..
