The missus is looking to upgrade - I tried to convince her down the type s / r route but she wants 5 doors :o, so I've convinced her to get the 1.8 , any advice on what to look for and are these as bulletproof as previous gen Hondas?

Specwise is there many variants - the higher spec the better. Budget is max €8K

Based on Colms recommendation on here herself bought a 10 reg 1.8 ES last October. So far so good, although it's barely covered 2k km in that time. They're a nicely specced car, decent enough go if needed and surprisingly economical. Tax is under 400 too which isn't bad at all.

Supposedly they're pretty solid, shocks are something that can leak, were replaced on our one. Its got 120-odd km on it, feels like it could do it a few more times. The only bad thing I can say is the engine can be a bit boomy and overall it's a little noisy but nothing turning the radio up on a notch or two won't solve.

I have 170km on mine now, 70 of that was done by me and it's literally been faultless.
It's very sensitive to tyres noise-wise. I have michelins on now and it's reduced road noise dramatically. As MC says, it can be a bit boomy, and the rear suspension is a bit clunky at very low speeds - fine at any decent speed though.
My only dilemma is what to replace it with. If it was written off today, I'd get another - and I never keep cars any length.
It's easily the best all round car ive had. The boot is huge with the floor dropped, it's economical, reasonably quick, and well equipped.
Will probably replace with the newer model when the time comes.

They're kinda expensive at the moment, I was lucky 3 years ago when I got mine as used car values were on the floor.

The missus is planning on selling her 2006 1.8L Civic soon. She's a bit worried folks would be put off by the tax on it. Think it's just above €600.

I'm telling her that surely there's folks out there that would like a Civic with a bit of power in it. Would I be right in saying that, or are her concerns re the tax valid. I know people are obsessed with low tax these days, but the tax on it is hardly prohibitive. They're a lovely car to drive.

There are a lot more saloon 1.8s out there than hatches.
The fact that there's no 1.4 or 1.6 saloons or diesel in that model (bar the hybrid) helps matters.
If someone is looking for a manual saloon, 1.8 is the only option.
There is a market for it alright, at the right price.

The one she has is the 1.8L Manual Hatchback (5 Door), are they more desirable than the saloon?

Just an update on this - picked one up earlier today after looking at a few very rough ones

She was adamant on the 1.4 but managed to presuade her to go for the 1.8 :D

Haven't driven it myself since the test drive last week but she likes it alot - decent spec, heated leather, AC, Honda bluetooth car kit.

Picked it up for a bit over 7k probably over paid a little but the car is in spectacular condition - no wear at all: it's a 2007 1.8 with a with 85k kms (full service history) got full service, 2 new front tyres (requested bridgestone, not chinese crap), change the back brake pads (worn) and a few parking dents removed and a full tank :pac:.

    Well wear op.

Thinking of one of these last model 1.8 petrol civics later in the Year. Prefer the look of the saloon, but both are nice looking motors. Anyone know what the low down on the 1.8 hatch v saloon is.

Same 1.8 engine in both, output, fuel economy, belt or chain, etc.. ?

What is the maintenance schedule like, same on both?

    Same road tax pre/post 08?

Was the hatch manufactured in the UK, where was the saloon made?

Are the weaknesses equal in both or is one more prone to problems?

    Cheers.

Saloon has higher tax than 5 door hatch post 08
Saloon made in Japan, hatch in UK
    Timing chain

Mrs drove from Dublin to Wexford and was getting 6.1Litres/100KM

Hatch is more practical than the saloon - as we've 2 dogs the boot is more than enough - push the seats down and there's ample amount of space
