A German biologist who offered €100,000 (£71,350; $106,300) to anyone who could prove that measles is a virus has been ordered by a court to pay up.
Stefan Lanka, who believes the illness is psychosomatic, made the pledge four years ago on his website.
The reward was later claimed by German doctor David Barden, who gathered evidence from various medical studies. Mr Lanka dismissed the findings.
But the court in the town of Ravensburg ruled that the proof was sufficient.
Reacting to the verdict by the court in the southern town, Mr Lanka said he would appeal.
"It is a psychosomatic illness," he told regional paper Suedkurier. "People become ill after traumatic separations."
A recent outbreak of measles in Germany has sparked a debate about whether vaccinations against the disease should be compulsory.
An 18-month-old boy in Berlin died last month of the disease.
The World Health Organization said it was "taken aback" by the 22,000 cases reported across Europe since 2014, urging to step up vaccinations.
Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease characterised by a high fever, a rash and generally feeling unwell.
The most severe cases can be fatal.
hah, Haha, HAHAHA fecking twat got what he deserved. The fact that this man was a biologist is absolutely astounding.

Cases of preventable diseases are popping up all over Europe and the States, courtesy of the brain-dead, hipster morons with the IQ of a ham sandwich who have been campaigning against the evil gubberment, who's plan is to make money for the Pharmas. A person I know doesn't have his child vaccinated because he read on some webpage (which, of course he says is fully trustworthy because it stated "Things your doctor won't tell you!") that in these vaccinations are liquidized dead babies and animals, the mind baffles.)

Do you know any anti-vaxxers? Give us your experience with them. Are you an anti-vaxxer? If so, why?

Is hipster just basically a word for people you don't like now? No other traits needed?

Excellent, now we just need someone to get Deepak Chopra to hand over his million dollars

    http://theness.com/neurologicablog/index.php/deepak-challenge-to-skeptics/

Any Neuroscientists around who could do with a bit of cash?

I think the main barrier to this however, is that no judge would be able to figure out what the feck Deepak actually wants anyone to prove thereby making the challenge un-winnable.

There was someone on a thread not so long ago, insisting that breastfeeding made babies immune to HIV and that there was no need to give formula to babies with HIV infected mothers. Big news to every infectious disease specialist working in developing countries, I can tell you. Someone should tell them.

Given people actually believe something so self-evidently stupid, nothing an anti-vaxxer says surprises me.

YES!!! I love it when charlatans are called out. Doesn't happen nearly as often as it should.

We sat again for an hour and a half discussing maps and figures and always getting back to that most damnable creation of the perverted ingenuity of man - the County of Tyrone.

I despise that man, on so many levels. I don't despise his loyal fans, but I find it hard to take them seriously.

Infinite possibilities of cosmic bollox talk, an absolute disgrace that he has earned millions on such piss-poor mangling of science who pulls out his "atheists are out to get me" card at every opportunity when he gets pulled up on it.

Another wizard Oprah gave a platform to.

Me, I'm ANTI-vaccine, I don't want future generations to have to take vaccines for measles or polio or whatever.

    These idiots are PRO-vaccine.
Their actions are dedicated to ensuring future generations will still need vaccines.

It's got to the stage where I'm starting to think that they are most afraid of being stuck raising an autistic child, despite the fact that Wakefield faked the data and that the main risk , up to 98%, of autism is genetic. .

The problem now is the cost of developing and assessing new vaccines for those diseases which could have been eradicated. I'm glad that some clinics have stopped accepting non-vaccinated children and hopefully this goes some way to convincing people that vaccines are necessary.

Kudos? He offered it and then refused to live up to his obligation when conclusive evidence was proffered.

If he was a person who accepted evidence he wouldnt have been against vaccinations in the first place.

Why Kudos when he wouldn't pay up? I'm just glad he has legal expenses on top it now.

Equating anti-vaccers to ham sandwiches is terribly harsh....on ham sandwiches...

I could offer €1m towards helping sick kids. I don't have €1m. Do I still get the credit though?

Campaigning against something that could prevent someone from giving their children life-saving treatment is not the same as a false promise.
