Black background, nice northern window light to the front right, no light to the left. Difficult to get those funky circular catch lights in the eyes though without an umbrella or a big circular soft box. You should get nice window shaped ones though

It's not that hard with a low key image. Matte Black backdrop and light from the front right quarter (as said above)

You can do it with a window, but may be easier to use a speedlight off the camera on a stand (or anything which will support it) with a diffuser ( A white sheet in a make shift frame will do) Keep a good distance between the subject and the background so it stays dark. Shoot manual, ISO low, shutter speed on 125th and aperture chosen for your desired DOF. Flash should also be on manual and set the power to get correct exposure. You may want to have some reflectors (pieces of styrofoam packing work well) to give some fill light (or not as you choose) Setting up you can use a torch as a modelling light to see where the shadows will fall and when you like the look set your flash in that spot.

You don't need a backdrop. Just do it at night and turn off the lights. Lighting as said above.

Or if you actually understand lighting, you can just use aperture to kill the background light.
