Statue in memory of murdered schoolgirl Sarah Payne stolen

I really don't understand what goes through people's minds. Some people seem to have no humanity at all. Assuming that it was clear exactly what they were stealing, this is such a scummy thing to do. Horrible.

The mother of murdered eight-year-old Sarah Payne has told Sky News she "felt sick" after a statue given to a school in her daughter's memory was stolen.

Sara Payne and the police have appealed for help to ensure the safe return of the 2ft-high bronze figure of a young girl.

Police said three people were thought to have been been involved in the theft and a van was seen in the area around the time of the offence.

Sarah's mother, Sara, told Sky News she feared the statue could end up at a scrapyard and melted down, and she appealed for such businesses to look out for it.

She said she felt the theft was "opportunistic" and wanted to get the appeal out so the statue would become "unsellable".

"Monetary-wise it's not worth that much. It's worth far more to the school," Dr Payne said.

"The residents feel sick and I feel sick about it."

The statue was presented to the school in memory of Sarah, a former pupil, who was abducted and murdered by Roy Whiting in 2000.
